Dental student here studying for the CBSE (short version of Step 1) for OMFS specialty. Currently using all the sources that I've seen in med forums (pathoma, FA, and b&b) + light year deck. The way I'm using anki is by aligning the system I'm covering in my curriculum to my CBSE studying and transferring the cards for that specific system to a separate deck "Current Review." I'm currently repeating the same process for every system that I go over.

However, I'm realizing that my "current review" deck is not showing me any new cards for the recent set of cards that I transfer from light year and it continues to show me cards for the very first two systems I have covered.

Does anyone have any advise on what I can do to have all the cards in that deck (even the most recent ones that I just transferred) to be shown frequently?

Also, I'm not in a school where my curriculum is integrated to the medical school so any advise on how to go about studying for this monster would be greatly appreciated :.)

Thank you,

Just to clarify--are you not seeing the cards you transferred over at all, or are you seeing them less frequently than you would like? Did you confirm that the cards are not suspended? Are you doing new cards every day, and is your new card limit set too low?

Thanks for your response. The new cards are definitely transferred to my "current review" deck but they are not showing up at all (i.e i started studying GI/ENDO and then I went onto reproductive/hematology but I've only been seeing GI/ENDO cards for past couple of weeks, which is really annoying. I have 100 new cards/day and 9999 max reviews/day.

So are you not seeing any new cards at all, or did you not get through the GI new cards? Also can you double check that the cards are not suspended? If the cards are not suspended, and you're still seeing no new cards, then we will probably need a screenshot to help you further.

I see what you're saying now. I have yet not gone through all the GI/ENDO new cards after a couple of weeks of starting these. In such case, do I have to get through ALL those cards for GI/ENDO before I start seeing cards for the new system that I recently transferred? Ideally, I would want to see all of the cards that I have in that deck in random order regardless of which ones I transferred first.

Sorry, I'm still getting used to ANKI but I do not believe they are suspended. All I did was highlight all of the cards for that particular system and switched them from light year to my "current review deck" Please see screenshots below.

Thank you so much for your help :,)

Gotcha. Yeah cards show in the order they are added. If you want to randomize, open up Browse, go to your Combined Current deck, add in an additional tag "is:new" (so the search command should be "deck:Combined Current" is:new), do ctrl+A to select all, right click, reposition, and check randomize. That will present you new cards in random order, at least until you add new ones.

If you're doing 100 new cards a day but still not getting through all of them, I wonder if you have too many cards. 100 cards per day is going to load you up on reviews pretty quickly.

Thank you for this!

By doing this, will this essentially reset all the cards I have already gone through and categorize them as new?

Do you have any advise on what the most optimal # of new cards I should work with?

It will not, the is:new command means you will only be selecting new cards. If you want to be safe you should make a backup of your deck first.

I personally try to keep new cards in the 40-50 range, although I have had to go up to 80 sometimes depending on the module. This can vary a lot, though, depending on how quickly you go through cards. I'm relatively slow, so others probably can do more than I can.

Got it. I was aiming for 100/day thinking that this would help with the problem I had of my new cards not showing up but it did not and just increased my reviews to an overwhelming number. Thanks for helping me out with this, I went through my cards yesterday after I did what you suggested and I finally see the new cards!

Thanks again & best of luck w med school! 🙂
