I'm trying to decide when to study abroad this summer. Unfortunately, I'll be applying to med school during that time too. I have the option of either going abroad for the month of June or for July. Let's say I sent in my primary on the first possible day...do you think I would be able to finish secondaries by July? Or would my better option be to go abroad in June? Any insight would be great! Thank you!

Go during June. AMCAS didn't submit applications until 6/29 this cycle. No secondaries until July (in most cases).

I submitted in June and studied abroad in July. The week after I got back, I was verified and started doing secondaries. Time it so the month you're abroad, AMCAS is working on verifying your application.

Okay, thanks! So if I submitted my primary on the first day possible, it might not even be verified until the end of June??

I don't know the logistics of your trip exactly but I studied abroad last summer from mid May to about the end of June and someone in my group was applying during that time and it seems to worked out okay for her.

Not necessarily. I know people who were verified days after they submitted, but this was when submitted on the very first few days. Then take me - I submitted 2ish weeks after it opened and it took well over a month. YMMV.
