Are you allowed (or do professors at least generally not care) to have beer in the actual building of med schools while studying? Just wondering because almost every night of the last year of my undergrad was spent at my universities biochem library (small library-2 long tables with 12 normal chairs, a full length couch and 2 big comfy chairs-almost no one was ever in there besides us) with 2-3 other people and we would, 3-4 nights a week, buy a 12 or 24 pk of some type of nice beer (sam adams/fat tire/Guinness) and a few pizzas or other type of food and just eat/drink and study for 7-8 hours (normally start around 4-5pm and stop around 1-2am). Yes, we did actually get a lot of studying done and we were all taking exactly the same courses so it made it more enjoyable.

I know some of you may not think drinking and studying go well together but I know I studied more that year than any other 2 years combined and I made much higher grades (especially when considering the courses-p chem1&2, 500 lvl biochem, anatomy w/lab, thesis, rad bio, and microbio to name some) than if I had studied the same way I had my first 3 years.

I seem to have really poor study habits when I try to study at my house or a friend's house which is why we decided to do this on campus and not just somewhere else. Also, it always seemed like at least 1 person had to run experiments at strange hours so it was just easier to be within a minutes walk of our labs while studying. And finally, it is a lot of fun when one of your professors walks by and notices all the food and beer (a long with piles of notes scattered on the table) and sits down with us and talks awhile about what were studying.

Anyways, our campus was a dry campus but our PI's were always bringing in beer during weekly lab meetings so obviously the rule was very lax, at least in this particular building. Anyone who is currently in med school or has finished have any input if I might be able to set something up like this again when I start in the fall?

A) Ask yourself the CAGE questions
B) I know of a friend at another school who cracked a beer outside after a test who had to meet with the dean
C) You probably wouldn't get caught tbh.

Haha, I like the cage questions but I have been out of school for almost 10 months now and I've only had about 5 alcoholic drinks since. I guess I'll just have to see what the atmosphere is like when I get there as its probably different for every school. It was just so awesome walking into thesis presentations last year and being handed a local brew by the dean of natural sciences just for attending.

At LECOM, alcohol isn't allowed anywhere on campus (including the parking lot), nor is it allowed at any off-campus event connected with the school (like the dance my class's eBoard is throwing in April or the picnic SGA held for the OMS-I's back in August.)

dude really? Just study and then go out and party. I guarantee you could have been equally efficient (without distraction) by studying 5-9 and then going out drinking from 9 to 1, while attaining a much better quality of "work hard/play hard".

I would say most libraries wouldn't allow what you are doing now...sure if it's some small enclosed library where it's just you guys its not a big deal. But I guarantee any rational person who is not part of your group would be annoyed going to a library and listening to a bunch of idiots drinking beer, talking and chowing down pizzas.

If you have to do it, I'm sure you could find a room in some building for you guys to drink beers, study biochem, eat pizza, and even possibly have a circle jerk too while you study.

haha why does this not surprise me.

Also not allowed at LECOM:

Foul language
Colorful clothing
Sarcasm
Whole milk

lol, that said I think you'll probably find that alcohol won't be allowed in most med school buildings.

First of all, you are a champ and I hope you are in my med class because your study tactics sound too good to be true!

Second, well there is no second. You are a beauty, keep it real👍

Yeah, they disallow pretty much everything, which is why I spend as little time at school as humanly possible (thank God for independent study modules...)

I don't think it's a LECOM thing. I would expect alcohol to be restricted on most campuses. Every school I've attended did not allow drugs or alcohol or even tobacco on campus.

Several bars have wifi, though, so you could just do your studying there at a table.

Most medical students live off-campus, in apartments where you can have pizza-beer-study orgies to your heart's content! Just make sure to rent alone or with like-minded fellow students...

And who exactly are you to be preaching to this guy or judging what is clearly an effective method of study for him??

The OP has been accepted to med school, clearly he is doing something right.

drinking and studying goes hand in hand for me too, hopefully i find fellow students that have this in common!

It just started getting bad at the end of senior year in a bunch of bs classes where were would just have a 5th of jack in the room and cash it every few nights...woops!

I doubt it was the beer part that was effective for him. No one can possibly make the argument that alcohol improves cognitive functioning. Most likely the group studying was what worked for him and that can be done sans alcohol.

I have drank beer while studying for finals many times. 1. I like beer, all kinds of beer. 2. That was pretty much all that was available in our apartment. 3. It seemed to calm my nerves about the upcoming test and I could really get through the material.

I'm talking about drinking a beer or two not shotgunning them after each page of slides... Although there was that time freshman year during hell week as a pledge.
