2024-2025 Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (Harlem Campus)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got the downloads from the interview day and one of them is for the OMM dress code, does anyone know if they really make you remove religious head coverings etc.??
Religious exemption. They have a separate group for those with religious reason that practice OMM in a separate room.

There was a portion where we listened to a bunch of different lectures and had our cameras on. Everyone asked questions and it was nice getting to hear more about the school. My interview was pretty basic and conversational, with the usual interview questions, nothing crazy/out of the ordinary (Tell us about yourself, why medicine, why Touro, what makes you unique, etc). But I felt kinda grilled esp toward the end when it felt like they roasted me for my MCAT score (Even though its their average lol) and honestly didn't feel too confident after the interview, but I got an acceptance! Good luck, you got this 🙂

Has anyone interviewed for the Montana location? how was the interview?

A word of advice for future interviewees - be prepared to sit still and upright for the ~3.5 hour long presentation! I saw so many people in my presentation group yawning, looking around, excessively fixing their hair in the camera, swiveling or slouching or laying back in their chair or just generally looking bored asf… and the dean of admissions was on the call the entire time LOL.

I have always been told that you never know who is watching you! So be on your p’s and q’s at all times. Look interested even if you’re not saying anything whether that’s nodding in agreement or smiling here and there. Even though you’re in a group, you never know if it’s your face that pops up on their end!

any current students on this thread? i have a few questions about students experiences and extracurriculars as i prepare for my interview next week! thanks in advance🙂

Prob the last year I'm gonna do this. I'm a fourth year at Harlem. I got in thru the masters program so Im not the best to ask about the interview process, but I'll try to answer questions as best as I can.

How'd you like your time there? Do you think its pretty high up there in comparison to other DO schools? Any advice you wish you had known when you started?

I enjoy my time there. I think the highlight was the people (most faculty and students). I would say it's middle to upper when compare to every other schools. I say the big thing is to pace yourself and be very adaptable when it comes to your study habits. Don't try to push your way thru if a study method is not working. Things that I would change: in person classes (half and half on that), lessen the exam schedule during first year and some more support during finding fourth year rotations.

Do you see students performing well and matching into competitive specialties? Does the school support this kinda thing or are you largely on your own.

I think most students perform well on boards (though the recent class that took level one did dip below 90%). Match list is published onto Touro website. EM / FM / IM makes up a bulk of the match, but there are matches in anesthesia (what Im personally hoping to get), surgery, DR, ortho, OB, PMR, psych and last year there was a vascular surgery match. Support is hit or miss. They def give u a lot of support for the boards (more step 1 than step 2). What they could do better is to help get people fourth year rotations. Not sure if that answers ur question.

Hi, anyone receive a weird interview email? Says your application will be considered for a "personal interview by the admissions committee" but is really vague about which campus and does not really provide any information either scheduling or when the interview will be?

Actually edit, even though I just submitted my secondary around 2 months ago I just realized this email was more of a confirmation they had received my secondary application and not an invite for an interview yet I guess. Wording was super confusing and I thought my secondary already had been confirmed? 😭😭😭

Hi! Would be able to describe your rotations experience? How's the quality of them, did you enjoy them, and were you happy with your placement?

Hello. TouroCOMs rotation site for third year includes Montefiore Nyack, NUMC, Harlem Hospital, South Brooklyn Hospital (Coney Island), OBH (mainly Brookdale), Palisades, RWJ medical center (Toms River), St Clares, St Marys, St Josephs, St John (Far Rockaway), SIUH (under Northwell) and Wyckoff.

In the spring semester of the 2nd year, they have u arrange all the available site in the order of most desired to least desired. Then it goes through some type of algorithm and gives u ur site for 3rd year.

I got South Brooklyn Hospital formerly known as Coney Island Hospital (my first choice). I chose it as it was one of two sites (the other being harlem hospital) that had surgery split up into 1 month of surgery and 1 month of anesthesia (I was interested in anesthesia). I thought it was a enjoyable experience rotating at Coney. Both the attending and residents were great in teaching. The experience is honestly what you make of it. Its easy enough to skirt by if you want or you can also do a lot. You are rotating with NYITCOM and SGU medical student along with some PA students occasionally.

1. FM (2 months) -> Half of the ppl rotating goes to a small clinic affiliated with OBH and the other half stays at Coney. I went to the OBH clinic which was decent. Small clinic seeing mostly elderly patients. You do a lot of MA work, taking history, taking vitals, doing some OMM, etc. Not a bad one to start with.

2. IM (2 months) -> Rounding and seeing patients alongside the intern. No real note writing (though you might get someone who tells you to write a student note for practice). Alot of time to study. Gives you a preceptor from one of the IM specialty that you meet with twice a week. I got a cardiologist which brought me down to the OR to help with pacemakers and loop recorders.

3. Surgery (1 month) -> 1 week of clinic (really just shadowing), 2 weeks of general surgery (preround on patients and then attend cases; involvement depends on type of cases, robot assisted and the residents on the case), 1 week of SICU (a lot of rounding and taking care of drainage and stuff)

4. Anesthesia (1 month) -> at Harlem hospital, one of the best rotation (even if you're not into anesthesia), do a lot of intubation, extubation, pushing medication, IV placement and preproc assessment. Attendings are nice (mostly with attending as there's only 3 CRNA). Takes you out to dinner on your last day.

5. OBGYN (1 month) -> 1 week of clinic (have both gyn and OB clinic; teaches you pap smears and pelvic examination; guys might have difficulty here (my experience was patient kick you out 50/50)), 1 week L/D (attend vaginal delivery and C sections), 1 week gyn surgery (chill week depending on the amount of cases; other student very willing to defer to u if u're interested in OBGYN otherwise u divide amongst urself), 1 week of consult (honestly study week). Have pick of weekend shifts or night shifts.

6. Pediatrics (1 month) -> 1 week of clinic (depending on attending, ur shadowing or seeing patient urself), 2 week peds ED (very busy but very enjoyable, a lot of cases of viral illness so wear a mask), 1 week of postpartum (infant examination, attend c section to do APGAR, NICU)

7. Psychiatric (1 month) -> 3 week of inpatient (round and then see any newly admitted patient urself), 1 week of consults (attending is very friendly), honestly one of the more chill rotations with hours being 9-12

8. EM (14 shifts) -> 11 day shift with 3 night shifts (on weekends) and 2 weekends; very busy seeing a lot of different cases, seeing patient by urself, not a trauma center so miss out on that; 12 hour shifts

9. Elective -> Touro is nice enough to give u a elective month where u can either do a online elective (1 more month break to ur preexisting month break) or u can do a elective in ur choice of specialty.

All in all I enjoyed my rotation in Coney. Def learned a lot and did a lot.

Can someone respond as to whether lectures are in person or only online at this school? And if they are in person, are they also available by recording to review them afterwards?

Anything anyone can say to compare this school (Harlem) with NYIT? thanks so much!

They have a flipped classroom, so you watch recorded lectures prior to coming into class. They said in-person classes are primarily held Tues, Wed, and Thurs. Exams are typically Monday or earlier in the day on Friday.

anyone interview today that wants to chat about their experience i literally can not read how that went

Hello! I recently interviewed at TouroCOM Harlem and am very impressed by their program. However, I didn't see too many photos or much online about their facilities/ campus environment. I know it is in NYC, so the city is the campus, but do any current or former students have insight about their facilities or local amenities? Thank you!

This might be a silly question, but if I got a "secondary application confirmation" email and my app status is "under review" does that mean it's complete?? I submitted 2 months ago and never got an "application complete" notification so I'm just wondering!

Hi! I submitted in Sept and got an email confirming submission. I then got an application completion email in Nov.

Hello! I want to apply this month (i know I'm super late in the cycle). My stats are 3.0 sgpa and 3.3 cgpa and an MCAT of 509. Is there any chance I can make and is it still worth applying? I really want to start this fall, so looking for any advice especially from current students who may know the landscape.

I've heard of people who have applied to DO schools in January and gotten in, its worth a shot. I would just apply very broadly.
