Studying for FM ITE?

Hey all -- I've got an upcoming in-training exam that I've managed to do poorly on the previous two years.

Need some advice on how to study for this -- I've been told to do lots of old practice tests but that doesn't seem to work -- too much like hearing sound bites without a more detailed explanation.

Does anyone who did well on these exams have some pointers?

Do you read the AFP Journal religiously? The one that comes out every 2 weeks?

The vast majority of questions and topics come from articles covered in the AFP journal. Reading the journal routinely is also the key to doing well on the boards, BTW.
