As premeds, we are supposed to be master study-ers right? Even on Friday nights. . .

Where do you guys study?!? Our libraries are closed, and I don't get much done at home . . .

I used to think the lack of places to study was fate's way of saying to take a break 😉 . . .

Fridays are for drinking copious amounts of buzz and not remembering where your car is in the morning.

Yeah, I'm a nerdy weekend studier myself, at least a fair amount of the time! I like studying at Barnes and Noble. There's one super close to my apartment, so it's easier to get there than to a library on campus...plus they're open 9am-11pm every day.

I have friends who never did anything more than 2 hours before something was due/an exam! They said spending anymore time than that was just a waste. They weren't premed (engineers) but it seemed to work for them... But I'm a mere mortal. 🙂

I was an engineering major. The large majority of our studying was done every single day when working out problem sets. Cramming for a test did us no good because our tests were all open-book, open-note. Test averages were still in the 60's and 70's most of the time. For the biology classes I've taken, that's a different story. Pay attention in class, study for a good amount of time to make sure you've got it down pat, and the A is yours for the taking.

The engineers on my campus piss me off. They always complain about how intense their curriculum is, how hard their classes are, etc. Then after they get reemed in their exams, they actually take pride in their 2.X GPAs. Yet, they never stopped to realizet that NO ONE FORCED them to go into engineering. They could have declared whatever major they wanted. They could easily switch out of engineering into **insert joke major/humanities major here** whenever they want. Yet, they still complain to no end. Premeds are the most whiny when it comes to complaining about points on an exam...but in terms of complaining about courseload..engineers take the cake. At least premed students study and don't put everything off until the day/week it's due. One of them even told me..."How hard can molecular biology (my major) be? It's only memorization, right?" (I don't think he actually knew that you need to take 1 year of physics, 1 year of organic chemistry, and 1 year of calculus just to complete the non-bio lower division courses for molecular bio...lol). They always brag about how showers were installed in the engineering building (where the engineering library is), so the students could basically study 24-7 there and not even have to go back to their apartments because there are showers there (they just bring sleeping bags, toothbrushes, pajamas, etc).

Yep, it's Friday and I'm studying! I have two midterms next week (and a quiz) as well as several lab reports. Yeah, next week is going to hurt.

See....Friday just has this issue with me. I will study all week long and most of Friday but when it hits about 6pm on a Friday and the library closes...that is a hint to me to relax and take it easy for the rest of the night. I actually work my week around an easy friday night and possible gameday on saturday. (I'm from Tennessee and we take football as a religion down here) Take tomorrow for instance. The ENTIRE campus is closed for traffic as there is a football game here and they get around 110,000 people around campus. I'll go study for the beginning of the day and head over to see the game at night. As I don't live on campus I have a hard time going to study research or for classes due to the hoopla. So.....I cave and "suffer" having to go to the game and cheer and I "suffer" on Fridays when I relax for the evening as well. Of course I really do suffer when I am back in the library early sunday ready to make up for the weekend cause I feel guiltly 😛

I'm studying tonight too at least 4 hours, with a few brakes to talk trash on sdn, then around 10pm it's off to da club. And then on again on Sat. for a good 6 hours then off to da club again. And then on Sun another 6 hours and then off to a movie at night. Get used to it guys studying on weekends are a good way to catch up or just solidify what you already know. Tuff it out it's worth it in the end. But it's good to know that others are studying too, misery loves company.

Engineering majors piss me off too! 🙂 Just kidding, just kidding...but my ex is one and he hardly does any work, yet has a 3.97 (all A's and one A-) at Ohio State! He has fun every single night of the week...I'm jealous! 🙂

Classes are hard, curriculum is intense, and most people understand their GPA's will be lower. They stay in it because they probably want a decent paying job once they graduate. I wonder if they ever go to any internet forums and complain about how hard Organic Chemistry is.😕

I'm an engineer. PFOS 3.96, never studied on a Friday after 4pm and never will........... not even in med school. Friday nights will be for family.

haha i've gotten that too. its the best when it comes from the business majors though. 🙂

I never complained about how "hard" organic chemistry is. I just stated that it would be one huge, brutal nightmare. 🙂 Please take care to separate a "complaint" from a statement of fact.

I think most pre-meds a little high strung. I can be like that sometimes. But studying on Friday? That's a little extreme! There's more to life than a 4.0 GPA (though it's nice to see all A's on your transcript). I think even if you worry and worry...you cannot improve your grades. Don't worry! Relax and have great Fridays away from those books! And use the weekends to explore different interests like rock climbing, get caught up in your research, or volunteer! These are some of the things that should define your undergrad experience, not just a 4.0 GPA.

Yeah, I gotta go with ya on this one. I guess its just the SEC in me, cause even though Miss State *sucks*, I still feel the need to go to every game, even if that means blowing off studying an entire weekend (gasp!) to drive to New Orleans. Pretty much...no study on Friday or Saturday for me! I'm only undergrad once!!!!!

HAHA...no kidding!!! Who the hell studies on Fridays? In fact, I bet that 95% of my undergraduate weekends involved no studying at all!

Of course, that's the qualification test for a career in medicine...if you can't get good grades during four years with a constant hangover then you probably aren't smart enough.😀 😀 😀

This is an excellent approach. Only problem is, if your able to study six hours on Saturday and Sunday, then it's obvious that you didn't take advantage of FREE DRINKS TILL ELEVEN at da club. What a waste!

I admit that I'm one of those who typically studies some on Fri nite and sometimes Sat nite even, but my town sux as far as the social scene is concerned, I don't have a car, and my bf works retail so he works all weekend anyway lol. Instead I try and take one or two evenings off a week that work with his schedule (typically Sat or Sun and then Wed or Thurs), and while my school doesn't have a football team I let myself watch his alma mater's game and my NFL game during the weekend 🙂. The day you take off doesn't matter, but you definitely need to take time off to chill and have some fun doing whatever you consider fun!😛

I'm tryin to get my mack on more then just getting crunked up, but I do get faded enough that I don't get up tell 1 p.m. Study somemore and do it again. Oh yeah da clubs in L.A. don't have free drinks till 11, and on top of that who goes to a club before 11, we just don't do that in the city of glitz and glam.

I have a few thoughts:

1) Why are you all studying on Friday night? The girl from UCCS has a legit reason, but still you've got have friends, right?

2) I was an engineer and never studyed on friday nights during undergrad. Med school has been a different story. I've been going until midnight everyday since last Saturday. Cell bio in 3 weeks is no fun (plus anatomy, histology, pathology, etc.)

3) Cramming for an engineering exam is useless as someone pointed out. I usually spent about an hour or so working out a few problems, and that was all.

4) The reason engineers don't switch, is because it is accepted that you'll get a low gpa. Employeers know it, the faculty knows it, you know it. 4.0's in engineering are a pretty dang rare. A GPA isn't everything. In Engineering, a 3.5+ is considering phenomenol, 3.0+ is great, a 2.5+ is average, and so one down.

5) The bio majors at my school were made fun of because everyone took bio classes to boost their gpa's. For the record, organic is a slack class. I was taking 18 hours both semesters when I took it, and the lab was somewhat annoying, but the class was a breeze. If you think physics, calc I, and organic make your curriculum difficult, switch places with an engineer for a day.

6) the reason engineers can have good time and still get stuff down is because intelligience plays a more significant role in those majors than in biological sciencies. If you're good, you can fly through assignments. Bio on the other hand requires enough memorizing that it will take anyone a decent chunk of time.

My dinner's ready.........

molecular biology as someone pointed out is not just mainly memorization as you are suggesting. I am a molecular biologist ( 4 more classes to go) and I think it is one of the top most difficult majors in undergrad. Molecular biology is ever changing which makes it very hard. I can also say Engineering is tough too. I think every major is hard. How hard a major is depends primarily on the individual although the fact stands that some majors are inherently harder than others.

Go out on Friday night - have a life. You can always study Sat day and Sunday.

Well, if you have a good time on friday, that means all day before 4PM saturday is shot. Then you check your E-mail, see what your friends are up to, check the SDN boards, and now it's 6PM. Get some dinner, it's now 7PM. Get caught up on the group meeting that was at 2, but you slept through, it's now 8:30. Check the SDN boards again, it's now 9. Oops, haven't showered or shaved since thursday, 10PM. Hike out to the mailroom to check on the glimmer of hope that you got an interview or acceptance (Thick envelope from Harvard!!! **Riiippp** Viewbook only? 20 reason why I should choose Harvard?? You peice of crap **Toss**) It's now 10:45. Time to do work, but first a trip to dunkin donuts for some coffee, so I can get some serious work done tonight- 11:15. Ok, time to really start working, but you know, it is late. If I do some of the menial things I have to do tonight, I can spend all of tomorrow studying, I'll do that. Drop laundry in washing machine. Clean room (AKA, shove things under couch). Watch Back to the Future on TNT. 2AM. Time for bed.

1PM Sunday: HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? Why is it late again? Ok, I'm going to really work now. 1:21 PM - I've looked at this stuff for about half an hour, I deserve a break. 3PM - Wandering dormmate - "Hey AverageMan, weren't you going to leave for that interview today?" Me - "That's next week, on the 19th" Dormmate - "Tomorrow is the 19th" Me - **blink** **blink** ..... *****PANIC****** "AHHHHH, gotta pack, let's see shoes, tooth brush .... Where are my clothes." **See yesterday 11:15PM** "AHHHHHHHHH"

So obviously, having fun on friday night will totally ruin your future. 😛 😛 😛

I had fun last night........ now my head really hurts........ and I have lots of school work to do today..... crap🙁

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! You're HILARIOUS!!!!!

That's soooooooooooo like me. But i'm making it a point to not procrastinate this semester. It's funny, b/c this friday night a friend calls me up at 11pm and they're like "wuuzzzup...what's wrong, you sound sad.." i was like "yea...working on my lab..i can't help it.." so then they're like " ON A FRIDAY NIGHT?!!?!!'" So i had to explain the life of a pre-med to them. But then saturday morning i wake up and here's this thread...pretty darn funny.

My saturday went pretty much like Average man said. Now i have to cram for some A&P and i'm thinking "what the hell have i been doing..when am i going to learn all this?!!"

Cheers!

I know a lot of people who do that and one or two of them are even telling the truth!

Yea I get that a lot also, mainly from engineering and physics majors.

Berkeleypremed what classes are u studying for?

To NRA12001: I have midterms for Chem3A and Bio1B this week. I also have a statistics quiz. What classes are you in this semester?

I have a midterm in MCB 135E, Nutri sci 10, south asian 140 on wednesday and then physics 8b and anatomy, and public health 280 next week.😕 😕 😕 😕

Whoa. That's a ****load of midterms. How many units are taking this semester? Also...south asian studies...are you Indian?

😕 😕 😕
How many Fridays does a family man have in a week? 😀
How many hours are there on a family man's Friday? 😀 😀

Thats 20 units, and yes I am Indian, r u?

Yeah, I am. That's a lot of units man, good luck.

Thanks, goodluck to u also.

I will study on a Friday night if I have an exam the next week, but since I study so much during the week, sometimes it's unnecessary. 😀
