Hello,

I wanted to know how much (i.e in hours) do people generally spend reading material outside on their own. I have recently started clerkships and by the time I get done from the hospital I am too exhausted to even pick up a book. What's the best way to learn material outside of class as there are no specific lectures given at our rotation? We discuss some topics and then the attending just says look it up.

Thanks in advance,

Every rotation/day is different. Generally it's a good idea to be reading up on your patients' conditions -- maybe 10-20 mins/day. Plus you ought to be studying for the shelf exam -- probably try to get through 20+ pages of one of the casefiles/blueprints/first aid type books each day. Certainly you do more on the day where you are only working 10 hours and less when you are in the wards for 15. But that's the drill. Obviously when the attending says look it up, you look it up -- try uptodate or whatever online service your hospital subscribes to and print out stuff to take home to read.
