I have a weird problem......

When i read/study, i find that the only way i feel like i am absorbing the information is to talk or read out loud. For whatever reason its seems like i have to talk myself through the concepts in order for things to stick. Otherwise, i feel like im just staring at words and not thinking through the information.

However, in the library when i look around i notice that everyone else is perfectly silent, not moving their lips, not whispering to themselves....they are just staring at their notes or text yet seem to retain the information and do fine.

anyone have any advice?

Advice: Stop giving a rats ass about what other people are doing. If you're not actually disturbing anyone else then keep doing what works best for YOU.

If you feel like talking out loud helps, then do it. Personally I do a lot of talking to myself when studying material, especially for the first time. Usually alone in my apartment though.

if you like to talk or read out loud you should probably study at home or somewhere private

It's pretty common to talk to yourself when studying. In some of the best schools in China where they are really hardore they make their students study like this every day before morning classes so you are certainly not alone.

One of my favorite ever undergraduate teachers did research along these lines. He was a specialist in LD, and reading out loud can be helpful in various conditions.

With normal learners, such as yourself, you're giving the information an additional 'input modality', which can be really useful with complex information that you'd have trouble processing otherwise. So go with it; it's not a problem. As above, just find somewhere to study where you can read aloud.

As it happens, it also works great for children just learning to read, which is why they're generally taught to read simple information out loud.

I do kind of an analogous thing with TV sometimes. If you've got a show with quick, snappy dialogue, and you turn on the closed captions, you'll find that you get stuff that you otherwise would have missed (try it on "30 Rock" sometime). Unfortunately, it drives everybody else nuts if they're not used to closed captions.

Talking out loud while studying helps me, too. Lately, I'll find a study room that's empty, and I'll write on the chalk board while talking aloud to myself. This helps me especially with lists of material I need to memorize. Plus, it helps me go through the material without looking at my notes so I know if I've really learned anything.

But, like everyone else says, I do it because it works for me and not because it's the "right way."

I'm the same way, do what works for you. I recommend an empty study room. Talking out loud + writing on white boards seems to work really well for me.

The only wierd thing for me is that I've noticed that I can't stop talking to myself all at once. After about 5 hours of saying everything I'm thinking I'll pack up and say something like "alright I guess I'm ready to go home"... pause, think about what I just said... "Oh crud, it's time to stop now".

I also need to read out loud to retain information - that's why, though I live a stone's throw away from the library all the med students study at, I end up doing all my studying at home in my studio apt - I get my 'social life' in the lab, and so far it's worked fine for me - but ask me again in two weeks after our first exam!

I feel that if this guy actually sat down and thought about the question he posted, common sense would give it to him in less than 30 seconds.

See that "5+ year member" tag under his name? He's spent 5+ years reading his own posts aloud after typing them out here.

you do realize that there is probably only <50 or so students from your class at the library right? I'm sure that someone is going to soon post about the implausibility of studying at a coffee shop.

I found my best study method is similar to this too. I need to actively work with the material to retain it. Reading or listening to audio doesn't do much for me. I mostly studied at home. I can't stand how quiet libraries are for studying and having to worry about making noise.

When trying to memorize terms, I absolutely have to say th out loud or they just won't stick. That's part of the reason why I can't really study in public places... I end up looking like that crazy person that sits on a bench in the park...

Why feel strange if it works for you?

1. It's not weird, just inconsiderate if you're doing it in a library.
2. It's not a problem, it's an idiosyncrasy. Don't worry, you're not alone.
3. It's not really advice, but I think you should stop making pointless threads in a feeble attempt to catch up to TheProwler's monstrous post count.
