i'm thinking about stduying spanish in guatemala for a month before i start med school next year.

any thoughts about the subject in general and/or about guatemala specifically?

I spent a summer in Guatemala a long time ago (1997) and it was really wonderful. If you are thinking of studying spanish, there are two major places Antigua and Quetzaltenango (aka Xela pronounced Shela). Antigua is a really beautiful historic city, but also the most touristy part of Guatemala. Xela is a bigger city, up in the mountains, more "off the beaten path" than Antigua, it is predominently an indiginous area (many people speak Mam as their first language). I spent most of my time around xela and if I were going there now I would return to that area-- it is more of an "authentic" experience and it is not too far other cool places to go chichitenango (a big market town), Lake Atitlan, etc. however, regardless of where you go there will still be a number of tourists (North American and European)

I wish I can speak Spanish! It is such a useful skill! A lot of medical schools offer medical Spanish classes that you can take in the evenings during the regular school year- so you get to learn how to say "please take a deep breath when I put my finger in your rectum..." in Spanish!
