from a soon-to-be psychologist.

I am pretty sure I broke my toe last night. It hurt like hell and it now part of it is purplish. Do I …..

1. Go to the emergency room, wait 3 hrs, get an x-ray, have a nurse tape up my toe, and leave with one of those nifty Velcro shoes.
2. Make an appointment with my PCP; wait 10 days; get an x-ray, tape and a nifty shoe.
3. Tape up my own damn toe and buy my own shoe from a drug store.

BTW. Don’t tell me to call the advice nurse. The advice nurse’s advice is always to go to the ED. Stomach ache = go to the ED. Runny nose = go to the ED. Kinda painful sunburn = go to the ED.

go to an urgent care. cheaper than the ED, but faster than your primary care doc. situation solved 🙂

I almost never xray toes unless I think there if a forefoot or metatarsal fracture, then I will xray the foot. The treatment is the same if it is broke or not..... Buddy tape. Make sure to put gauze in between the taped toes so the skin does not break down..........
From my own personal experience, I stubbed the hell out of my little toe a few years back, heard a loud crack. The little toe was nearly the size of the big toe, purple and hurt like a mofo. It did not look malrotated or majorly deformed....I did nothing for it, not even buddy tape it. It was painful for a few weeks, but healed up just fine....No long term problems or complications....

Yeah, those toes are sensitive creatures...and they can look pretty damn impressive when injured! I hear you on those nurse advice hotlines...welcome to the practice of defensive medicine (or nurse advice)!
