I think it causes vasoconstriction and thus hypertension. Although, I do know that it was used as a nasal decongestant, and in Pharm I I had trouble realizing that vasoconstriction of the vessels in the nasal mucosa leads to less edema and a relief of nasal congestion. Maybe this is your misundestanding?
 
thanks. i was reading it wrong...just like you said it causes hypertension. I also noticed that the same analogy can be used for epinephrine in the treatment of glaucoma, this how it reduces aqueous humor production. Although it is only of limited use since we don't use it in closed-angle glaucoma. 🙂

How again does epi treat glaucoma? How does it reduce humor production? I just dont.. I just don't know about the epi mechanism. Those little epi's they run circles around me. :idea:
 
it is not a very efficient treatment but i believe it is through vasoconstriction, although the problem is the mydriasis it produces is one thing you don't want in the treatment of glaucoma, since it can increase your ocular pressure.

In the end, I think it was discovered empirically.

There's something called as rebound effect...go back to your notes you will come across this. Extremely important to understand when dealing with cardiac patients..also keep in mind you may not be stimulating all adrenergic receptors. So you might have hypertension but hypotension in peripheral circulation.
