How does stuttering or stammering affect a person's choice of becoming a doctor. Sometimes a doctor has to make a life or death decision very quickly so what happens when the doctor can't get his point across due to stuttering?

How has this affected anyone during interviews?

Of all interview settings, I would imagine medical school interviewers would be most understanding of such a problem. I think as long as it isn't Tourette-like and it doesn't happen every question, you should be fine. Also, don't go into emergency medicine if YOU feel this would hinder your ability to make life-altering decisions 😉.

The EM reference gave me a funny mental scenario. Thank you.

If you're unable to communicate when you absolutely need to, then yeah, that's going to be a problem. (And if the stuttering gets worse during stress... 😱 )

But there are speech therapists and counselors who can help with this, no?

When you ask questions on SDN, you're going to get a lot of this. Just get used to it, and you'll be ok.
