Based on the way things are working out, I'm going to have to get a LOR for residency from the attending during my sub-I month. What would be the absolute latest month for me to schedule my sub-I month? I was thinking of doing it in August. My original plan was to do it in July, but I'm doubtful if I'm going to be ready. I think maybe it would be better if I took an elective in July to warm me up for the sub-I in August.

Any opinions?

i did my sub-i in july and got a letter. theoretically i think sept is the latest, i would not push oct.

I thought most programs have deadlines for all letters being in by sometime in November?

They typically do. Which is why all the months mentioned were before November... Admittedly some attendings will take an absurdly long amount of time to write your letter, but often it doesn't really take that long.

My personal recommendation is to have your letters in to ERAS by October 1. The rest of your application should be in by September 1. Obviously, the earlier the letters are in, the better, but plenty of programs will go ahead and offer some interviews without them, if I recall correctly.

I'm probably going to be doing an away rotation that ends mid-October. I'll definately get my application in on the first day (along with the rest of my letters), but is it common to add one later? Especially for those people who want to get one from an away rotation that may not be as early as desirable?

I wouldn't think it would be a big problem, especially if you have some letters in already and the attending at your away rotation is willing to get the letter done quickly. You definitely want your letter in before your interviews, of course, and there are occasional programs that will begin interviewing as early as the last week of October. It's not worth stressing about though, your schedule is what it is, so work with it as best you can 🙂
