Since the MSPE (dean's letter) is released one month earlier for the class of 2013, I will only be able to take the rad-onc elective before the letter goes out. I won't have time to take the medicine or surgery sub-I. I have several questions about this.

1. Would rad-onc programs know about my performance in a sub-I later on during the application process or is the MSPE the holy grail of information for them?

2. Is having your performance in a sub-I even that important for rad-onc residency directors?

3. Would this hurt my chances when applying to preliminary or transitional year programs?

Thanks Gfunk. I've honored internal medicine so I have that part covered. I'm glad to know that having a sub-I completed before the MSPE is not that important.

Do letters of recommendations go out at the same time as the MSPE such that your application should be essentially complete by October 1st? I heard that sub-I performance was more important than even core clerkship performance. If you do a sub-I after October 1st, is all that effort essentially swept under the rug?

Your letters of recommendation can be uploaded the day that ERAS opens. I would encourage you to get them in a soon as possible. Sadly, faculty tend to drag their heels when providing students with timely letters.

For Rad Onc, your non-Rad Onc sub I's are not that important. Obviously this is not the case for Medicine or Surgery residencies.

My advice: don't even gamble. I got a lousy team for my medicine sub-I, waited forever for a bad grade, ended up fighting the grade I received (successfully), and my MSPE ended up going out really late in that process. Some of my buddies didn't bother with the sub-I before the MSPE and did just fine.

I didn't take my medicine sub-I until February and didn't take Step II until well after match. I don't think either matters much at all.
