Sub-Internship for Family? When and Where?

Thinking about planning for 4th year and need some advice on sub-I's. Are they necessary? If so, what's the best time in 4th year to do one? Should you definitely do it at your #1 choice for residency?

A friend of mine did all his sub Is at places he was interested in going. Not so much so he could make an impression but to see what places he liked best.
