Current 3rd year D.O. Our school does not have SubI's worked into our schedule. I've asked why this is and can never get an answer. Anyway, I'm wanting to do IM but unsure of how this SubI deal works. Is it really necessary? If so, do I set it up as an audition somewhere? Am I looking for a letter on this rotation? When's the best time?

sub I is fourth year, not third, and just do them in one of the 36+ weeks of electives I'm sure you have. You use VSAS to set them up just like any away.

A subI may not be required for your school but as one of your fourth year electives, you should schedule a subI. It is a really great way to solidify all the material you learned in third year. Most people set it up either at the end of your third year (if you have room in your schedule) or in July or August if you want the grade to come back in time for applications. It is basically 4 weeks of a general medicine ward where you get more patients (4-5 depending on team census) which you take primary responsibility for (i.e. you are the "intern"). I would be surprised if your school doesn't offer a SubI or AI (another name for it) elective, but if not, then use the VSAS to set up the rotation at another school. I would talk with the PD at your school. You can use this for a letter, but if you already have other letters, then it is not necessary. If you shine, it can make for a great letter.
