Hey Guys,

I'm a MSII about to rank my site preference for rotations next year. What should I look for in a rotation? A place that I can easily honor? Or a place where I will learn a lot? My school gives us a lot of choices but each site varies greatly.

I think some of the things you may want to look for in a core site are:

1) Good didactics (if they aren't a teaching-based facility, I think it will be much harder to know what you are supposed to be learning)
2) Good patient census and number of beds; variable patient population (you may not learn as much if there aren't enough patients, or they don't have a variety of conditions)
3) Staff, including interns, residents, and attendings, that are willing and eager to teach (speaks for itself; you want a team that is interested in your learning, not just scutting around or doing their work for them)
4) Will let you, as a student, get hands on and to do so a lot (if you are just shadowing, you won't learn as much)
5) Has a lot of GME programs (you want to be in a hospital that has programs and faculty)
6) Has a team approach to patient care, i.e., ward teams consisting of all levels, so that you get exposed to what it is like to be a part of the team.
7) Has most, if not all of the core rotations on site (so you won't be moving around like crazy every month.)

I'm sure there are other things, but these are what immediately come to mind.
