I currently am a student at NYU and play tennis for the school. I have a 3.6 gpa, but due to the conflict in time due to the season and MCAT, I performed poorly on my mcat receiving a 27. I was curious to if I should still fill out my amcas and send it out, puting that I am retaking my mcats on august 14, or should I send out my amcas after I receive my 2nd set of results. I have 2 concerns, my first is if I send out my amcas now, I do not want to be rejected pre secondary (or be put in a reject after we get his secondary depoist) because I got a sub 30, because I believe with studying I will be able to surpass it, but also, I get the second score results after some schools amcas deadlines, so I am in a sort of bind. Basically what I want to know is are they going to judge me with my 27 or jus wait till they get my new score. Anyone who knows please respond, any advice would be excellent, Thanks

Send it in now, and indicate that you are taking the August MCATs. If you mark that you are retaking, they will consider your application incomplete, and will not look at it until they receive your scores. Thus, you would not be denied pre-secondary because they would not even screen you yet.

By sending now, you will avoid the longer time it will take to verify your application, and med schools can look at you immediately after grades are posted, instead of 4 weeks after if you submit when they are available. Also, some schools do not screen, and by submitting now you will have a chance to get a start on the secondaries from those schools.

Also I was wondering how much they value sports when they look at applications. I am not trying to make excuses, but a fulltime sport is nearly 40 hours a week plus loss off all weekends. Do they view this as just another club or as a serious time commitment? Also how do they view awards won in the sport such as academic all american/ captain/ division player of the year and things?

Anything that you devote a lot of your time to is going to be a MAJOR plus on your application. Adcoms want to see that you are dedicated to your pursuits, and can succeed at them. So it doesn't matter whether its research, varsity athletics, music, etc. As long as its something you enjoy, and you can talk about what you get out of it, it will be a very good thing on your app. Also, being a captain etc is gravy, becasue then not are you dedicated but you are also a leader.

I think you should apply, because a 27 while not the magic number 30 is still a decent score to get in at some school or another.

Actually, I think there are a few schools in Ohio, that have between a 27-29 avg.

Finch (Rosalind Franklin) also has a 29 avg as well as Miami, and many other schools.

however, that is only an avg, so give or take some may have less or more.
