I was trying to send out my FAFSA this month and all of my information is set, but my mother has had a particularly difficult year and is not at all organized just yet. She is waiting to receive statements from bank, her employer, etc.

Can I submit my own information to FAFSA immediately and then later make changes to my submission to include my mother's information? Will this somehow detract from the aid that I get, or significantly increase the time it takes for processing? Is this a good idea?

Thanks in advance.

The "processing time" with FAFSA is basically nonexistent, so that's not something you should be worried about. I would just wait if your mom thinks she'll have everything available in the next few weeks. If it'll be closer to Tax Day (i.e., April), then I would file your FAFSA with estimates and revise the info as necessary. The best scenario would be to file immediately with estimates from your mom and then revise the info once she has done her taxes.

I would just put in estimates for her info. That's what I did with mine. Good to get it in earlier. You can update them later.

Can I put an estimate for my own income? Haven't gotten W2 yet.

The application says if it will be similar, you can use your 2011 tax return. That's what I am doing for my own info as well as my mother's. I haven't even received any forms from 2012 except my mortgage statement, and I don't want to wait to fill this out.

Sounds good. Thanks

Sorry to hijack the thread, but my question is relevant to OPs original post.

Does parental income affect the federal loans offered (do they even consider that)? Does it have an impact on the interest rate? Or is parental income only considered when looking at institutional aid?

I am fairly certain my parents make too much for me to be considered for institutional aid, but I was wondering if putting down their info would hinder the federal loans offered.

Thank you.

No impact on fed loans (as they tell you at every interview day 😉).

As MedPR said, your parent's info has absolutely no impact on the loans you receive nor the terms you receive.

It has to do with the institutional aid they might offer you and a lot of schools require (or at least strongly strongly suggest) that you fill it in.

I have what may be a dumb question. My only job this past year was a TA position (which netted me less than $500), therefore I won't be filing a tax return. Should I file one anyway, or will schools not care? I have my parents' information.

Estimate. Then, use IRS Retrieval tool when the time comes.

Schools will not care - just report your total income when you fill out FAFSA.

Has anyone had to fill out a Need Access application? This thing is ridiculous. It's asking me questions I can't possibly know right now. It wants me to predict what my rent will be in 2013-2014. Currently, it's nothing, because I'm living with my folks, but I don't know what it'll be when I start medical school. It's also asking very detailed questions about my parents. It wants me to put down what our house is worth, and what they're income will be in 2013-2014 (how should I know? It hasn't happened yet!). It also wants me to put down what unusual medical expenses my parents may have in 2013-2014! I can put down guesses and estimates for these numbers, but nothing more than that. I hope that's all they want, because I can't be specific.

Many of the "top" schools have the Need Access form in addition to FAFSA.

Another question about the FAFSA. I know that it has space for 10 schools on the list (and some schools even require you to submit more than one code), which means that applicants will likely have to pick and choose which schools to include on there. If a school doesn't make the FAFSA cut, is it true that you might as well withdraw your application? Or is it possible, say, if you get an interview from a school you didn't include on the FAFSA, that you can switch around the schools?

I really hope everyone is right about being able to go back and edit parental info after submitting. I submitted today, but I know parental info isn't exactly correct.

If you couldn't update/edit it wouldn't really make sense to let you submit before filing. I submitted 2 weeks ago with estimated parental info and will be updating in the next couple of weeks with the actual figures from their returns this year.

Well, my parents aren't as quick as yours. I don't anticipate they will file for another two months.

I'd assume you'll be just as able to update as me or others. As long as you disclosed that you were submitting estimated info to be updated later you should be fine.

Edit: Normally mine aren't quite this early either, but I gave them a little extra motivation. 😛
