Title pretty much says it all. Is it worth postponing submitting my app to have DO shadowing? I have lots of healthcare experience and a very strong MD letter. I won't be able to shadow a DO until early next month, and I only have 6-8 hours of shadowing lined up with the DO.

Submit with the strongest application possible. July is still early!

I'm assuming your applying both MD and DO. If so, submit your AMCAS now and your AACOMAS after you get some shadowing. DO shadowing won't help with MD app and applying this early is not necessary for DO schools. If your really banking on osteopathic schools get a LOR from said DO. Good luck

Sorry to steal OP but I am in this exact same situation... I am relatively new to these forums, and have shadowing scheduled with a stellar DO... but its the last week of July. Everything else will be ready by that time and I plan to submit to a throwaway before then. July/August is steal early? And this early is not necessary for DO schools?

I'm also in the same situation, but, can't we submit the aacomas application right now with the future presumed DO shadowing listed on there?

Yes you can add DO shadowing after your primary has been submitted.

I thought the DO app doesn't allow for future hours to be listed?

I remember adding more to my application last year.

"Q: I haven’t begun my experience yet, but plan on doing so soon. Can I report that?
A: No, you cannot report “planned” experience. Once you have accumulated the experience, however, you can add new experiences to your application, even if you have already submitted it to AACOMAS. Please note you may NOT edit experiences which have already been entered. You may send updated information directly to the schools to which you are applying."

You can always add new experience just not edit old ones, you should be good to go to submit

Exactly.

So would you have to individually tell each school about the new added experience? or does the aacomas application automatically update on the adcoms side?

After adding new information to your application you can go to the main screen and press "update".

Besides pressing aacomas update after submitting primary you should also email programs and let them know of changes. Some do a poor job of keeping up with AACOM updates. Discovered that the hard way.

Can I submit a DO letter / shadowing AFTER I submit my primary? Like create a new entry? I want to submit in a few days but won't have a DO letter for at least a week.

Letter for sure, not totally sure about experience

Yep, you can definitely add new experiences. Be cautioned though that you have to fill out the new experience in ONE go after you have submitted to at least one DO school. No saving for later to finish up the paragraph or # of hours.

They will ask you "Why DO" in your interviews. It is nice to have some experience seeing DOs practice, and adds credibility to your interest of attending.
