I submitted an update to a school about 5 days ago, and now I want to take it down because it doesn't seem that big of a deal with the updating and it sounds pretentious/desperate upon second reading.

Would med schools think I'm crazy/desperate if I just call admissions and ask them to remove it? Will med schools have seen it in that time? Will this hurt me big time?

Well I was thinking I could phrase it as "I have uploaded a not so up to date file, and would like to re upload" and then never re-upload.

I just think that now looking back it really isn't that big of a deal in terms of updates and actually comes across as maybe a bit desperate and pretentious and I'm afraid the med schools will see that and think badly....

Try to chill out - at worst, the update will be ignored. And at best, they will take it into consideration if you're a borderline applicant for an interview invite.

For the love of god, don't contact them to ask them to take down the update.

That would make you look insane and irresponsible. That, or dishonest. None of those things is going to help you.

They'll think worse of anything at all you do to remove the update. Leave it be.

Even if my update comes across as pretentious/desperate?

If you ask them to take it down, I'm almost certain that at least one person is going to take a look out of curiosity. Then you have the added layer of neuroticism and indecision. Intuitively, I think it's best to live with the reality of this update.

What was it that belatedly caused you to re-evaluate the tone of your update, when it seemed perfectly reasonable to you on the first reading? Could you be over-reacting?

Rule of thumb for posterity: the only good updates involve new grades and new spouses.

99% sure this is facetious, but I actually do have a new spouse since I submitted my primaries. Is that actually worth mentioning in an update from a humanistic perspective, i.e. see how much of a real person I actually am, assuming I actually have some relevant content such as new shadowing/new volunteering to put in an update as well?

I was being facetious, and I personally dislike most updates. New grades should be submitted, and the only other thing which might move the needle on someone's candidacy with any consistency is if a spouse gets a job offer in our area. I know some folks like publication updates, but the vast majority of those are small-bore/coattail projects that mean little. In a nutshell, if you're primary isn't enough to make you competitive on its own then you shouldn't be applying. Yeah, I'm cynical about this issue.

Out of curiosity, what's the best way to update schools with new grades? Would you write a letter and say something like "I got an A in Class X, Y and Z this semester", or would you request and upload a new transcript? Not sure if it needs to be like official documentation or if I can just state my grades.

I just sent each school an email with an updated transcript. Most added them to my file while a few said they don't accept any updates until I've interviewed.

What about an update that includes moving to a new city, starting a new full time job, and a new volunteer activity?

At the time I submitted my AMCAS I was unemployed, so I thought that this update would be helpful to my application. Would really appreciate your opinions

If you plan to do those things but they haven't yet started, or are just barely begun, the update won't be helpful. If you have already done all those things for at least a few months, then go for it (at schools where updates are allowed).

It doesn't need to be official unless an updated, original transcript is requested by the school (which does happen sometimes).
