Im planning on having my application completed within 3-4 weeks. I haven't taken the dat yet prolly do it by 11/3. Just wanted to know if schools usually fill up their class by the december 1st deadline? There are a lot of schools that end up interviewing other people after the December 1st deadline right? I'm in the process for applying to pharmacy schools to but I decided to keep my option open and apply to dental schools. Wished I would've finished my dental application a couple months earlier.

Not all schools fill their classes by Dec 1, so it's not over until all the spots are gone. However, it will become increasingly difficult to hear back from schools the longer you wait.

This is a late application. Unless you have very strong scores, a strong application, a state dental school, or dental school connections it will be difficult to get considered this late in the cycle.

have you submitted your AADSAS application yet? Just remember that once you complete it and submit it there will be a 4-8 week wait until the app actually gets to schools. If you have decent stats you shouldn't worry about getting in somewhere because it's so late.

I wouldn't bother. You have two major strikes working against you.

1) Application is late..VERY late. BY the time your app gets mailed, most of the post-dec 1st interview dates will be filled.

2) Applying to a different profession at the same time will likely get your app tossed pretty much everywhere.

Even stellar DATs and GPA won't help this cause.

Save your money, I would consider taking the year off and working/shadowing both professions since you still are unsure.

if you're serious about applying, wait until may.. and apply for the following cycle.. dont think you have much of a chance at this point..
i took my DAT aug. 30th and i think that was about a month too late for a lot of schools.

I would be surprised if you got in anywhere if you apply now. The schools ask if you have applied to any other professional schools before. You can often get thrown out for just applying in the past, let alone at the same time. You need to know what you want to do before you apply. Pharmacy and Dentistry are very different things. Honestly, you are probably damaging your application to both by not choosing which one. I would think a little harder about what you want to do with your life and then go for that.

"Whatever" to everyone who says you're late. To some schools, sure, you're late. But there are a lot of schools that accept a lot of applicants pretty late into the spring. You're too late to be considered an SDN over-acheiver, but not for dental school.

However, on the pharmacy thing I think you've got to think things through a little more. I agree with everyone that says there's a huge difference between the two and you're probably jeopardizing acceptance to both by going at it in this way. The shotgun approach is never a good idea -- you can't let your future and your career be decided by the roll of the dice that is professional school admissions.

Thanks for the positive remark. That is weird that they ask you if you've ever applied to any other health profession. I dont remember seeing this on the pharmacy application. It probably shows that you do not exactly know what you want to do as a career. I still think that its definitely not too late to apply to dental schools. The schools are still inviting people for interviews after dec 1st right?

The applicants who recieve interviews after dec. 1, mostly, are ones who applied early and were bumped to the next round of admissions because their stats were not as good as the ones who received interviews in the first round. Unless you have stellar stats( 3.5+ scigpa, 21+DAT, EXCELLENT LOR's....) your chances of landing an interview are very small. Also, applying to two professional schools at the same time will be negatively looked upon.

And... I completely disagree with this. Your chances of admission get smaller but are certainly not small. And there are a lot of people who actually apply this time of year -- not just those that are bumped. I know a number of people who were accepted with submitted apps in December or later. It's not ideal to apply at this point in the game but it certainly doesn't exempt you from admission. Just make sure you know what you're getting into -- it's a lot of money spent on a pot shot.

Honestly, don't apply to both schools at once! I think maybe you should sit down and really think what you really want. Dentistry vs. Pharm are very different professions. Think about which field you would be happier in...don't try to throw yourself in either one b/c you're scared you might not get into the other. Find the profession you really want and go full fire on it. If you're doing everything correctly such as time management on application, grades, pcat/dat, EC's, and dental or pharm shadowing/experience you're on your way to getting an interview...my 2 cents anyway..

OP - just got this email from AADSAS:

The following dental schools have a November 1, 2006 deadline date:

University of Iowa 11/01/06

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 11/01/06

Oregon Health and Science University 11/01/06

The Ohio State University 11/01/06

Virginia Commonwealth University 11/01/06

University of Washington 11/01/06


The following dental school has a November 30, 2006 deadline date:

West Virginia University 11/30/06


Make sure you know when your schools' cut-off dates are. AADSAS sat on my app for 2 months, just to let you know. That won't matter for the cut-off date, but it will matter when the schools get it.

Also, I just looked at some schools and the DAT cut-off dates ranged from October to Dec 1st, but most of them were Nov 1st. And this is the date they want your scores by, not the day you need to take by. Maybe you can fax it to them though, I don't know. Anyway, make sure your schools will accept you score before going through the hassle of taking the DAT!

I have confirmed with the AADSAS that this deadline is when you submit VIA the AADSAS. Not when the schools receive the materials.

Sorry, was I confusing? That's what I was trying to saying. I was just also reminding the OP that the schools don't get your app as soon as you send it. 🙂

Thanks for letting me know that. The schools that I will applying to have their deadline either in december or january. Eh we'll see what happens...
