Submitting primary app in September too late?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Technically the deadline is not until Nov or Dec. So, technically, you are not too late. Also, several people are still taking MCATs this year. So, you should be fine. You may be a little late for schools that do rolling admissions, but if the summer courses help present your GPA better, you might as well wait. Alternatively, submit now and show the summer as a positive GPA trend. Your call.

Thank you for the clarification!

September is definitely way too late for primary submission, especially for Texas schools. While the “deadline” might be later, some interview spots will be gone by the time you turn in your secondaries. Even (or maybe especially) this year with various delays, you should still aim to send in your secondaries by late August/early September.

If you are that concerned about grades, you can always send an update letter.

I agree with the poster above. TX has a tends to have an earlier cycle. Submit your primary application soon and secondaries by mid September. Then submit a grade update letter. It should be short and to the point: classes taken, credits, grades received, updated cGPA and sGPA.

Just for clarification - how big of a change are you expecting in your gpa from the summer term?

.02 increase in gpa

In terms of timing
Too Late for TX
OK for AMCAS in this atypical cycle

in terms of competiveness
can you succssfully write a highly polished AMCAS and complete summer classes and jump right into secondaries?
That is na very tall order and I do not advise it

Fair points, will consider holding out for next cycle.

.02 increase in gpa
A 0.02 increase is a pretty minor change. Unless it is going to get you over a GPA cutoff point, I don’t think submitting your primary application with a GPA that is 0.02 lower would negatively impact you.

I do however agree with @gonnif that managing all of the work associated with the primary app, secondaries, and pace of summer coursework is a lot. Having an unpolished primary and secondary applications will likely have a much more significant impact on your cycle. Make sure you aren’t overextended before moving forward.
