right now my college is *just barely* meeting my need, but tuition/cost of living rises every year (from last year alone tuition rose by 3k). i was considering taking out loans because of this, but i know that subsidized loans have a lifetime limit, so would I be better off "saving" these loans until medical school, when I'll probably need them more?

There are no subsidized stafford loans for medical school. It is all unsubsidized staffords to the limit (40-something thousand a year) and then grad plus loans beyond that.
