This is a fun thread aimed at identifying some of the common characteristics or personalities present within each of the IM subspecialties:

Cardiologists

Gastroenterologists

Endocrinologists

Rheumatology

Allergy/Immunology

Heme/Onc

Pulmonology

Infectious Disease

Nephrology

I think of this a different way: which bodily fluid do you mind the least? That's how you really choose your specialty...

Cardiologists: there will be blood

Gastroenterologists: please

Endocrinologists: insulin?

Rheumatology: synovial fluid

Allergy/Immunology: none, it's the dermatology of IM

Heme/Onc: bone marrow/fragile blood

Pulmonology: snot

Infectious Disease: pus/wound exudate

Nephrology: urine

...Gastroenterologists: please...

So true! I'll never forget the time I did an anoscopy with one of the GI guys at the clinic I was rotating through, I slipped on a pair of gloves as I entered the room and the dude says "good you've got gloves, you can do a DRE". So after the DRE, I'm returning to the exam table after throwing the gloves out and there's the GI, taking a fecal swab through the anoscope with NO GLOVES ON.

:barf:

I guess working up people's tailpipes all day will do that to you?
