During my undergrad years, I have found that I haven't really learned from lectures at all. Lately, I've been so impatient and angry with how long the professor takes to teach the material with the side-talks and jokes that don't correlate to the material that we're learning at all. This results in me not paying attention to the lecture at all. So I have a question to all those that skip lecture.

I feel as though I would succeed in school if I were to self-teach myself the material and minimally attend lectures. My problem is, I really don't know how to self-teach myself the material because I'm just not used to it nor do I have any ideas on how to go about it learning the material on my own. My school doesn't have the lectures recorded online so I'm not sure what to do. Any tips for me?

Also, do you guys have any tips for me if the lectures aren't recorded and posted online?

Thanks!

chad course saver helped me through organic chemistry. I hear these books are great too Amazon product ASIN 111801040X . The author even made a text book

General chem, just try and read the text as best as you can. But Its really important to do lots of practice questions. Take advantage of your tutoring avenues if you have to.

Biology is really more manageable when you watch videos, ect. Flash cards (quizlet.com) helped me tons. Repetition!

There were times where I attended lecture and I was just reading the text book and keeping the seat warm. Professors can be really frustrating sometimes, you really have to look out for your self.

i felt that the only real reason to go to lecture in undergrad was to get the little "hints" from teachers when they told you to focus on a certain section more than others etc. or if they gave out extra credit...the rest felt pointless to me

It is really do able. I never pay attention in lectures if they just read off from the slides. Most of the time, they really do this at my school. I self taught myself a lot of courses, but probably put in more work than anyone else out there. You just need to set yourself time to read the materials and study with friends.

True, but I like the little tips and tricks they put in there, obviously vary from professor to professor. Those alone should be worth going to the class.

Lecture is hit or miss based on the person. Myself, I do not get much out of it. It is kind of annoying being forced to attend for a participation grade. I like doing my own thing and just going in quick to an office hour if i need to.

study ahead and go to lecture. this helped me for certain courses. I absorbed way more of what the professor said than if I hadn't.
