Thought I'd finally join the ranks!

First-time applicant, traditional, 22 years old, female

Undergrad: B.S. in Neuroscience, minor in Spanish and "concentration" in Health Care and Society (i.e. we don't give double minors so i declared the Spanish but had the classes for the other one!). Small LA college that is a good school and fairly competitive.

Overall GPA: 3.16 !!! (However I had a bad sophomore year for personal reasons and used the "anything else you want us to know" essays to explain that.
Science GPA: Low...thats all i remember - i took most of my prereqs early on!
Last 30/45 hours GPA: ~ 3.5 or a bit higher (we only give 1 credit for class so I only graduated with 36 credits, and so it was a mess trying to figure this out...so I can't remember exactly!)
GRE: 730 Q, 600 V, 5.5 AW

Applied (here goes): Auburn, UC-Davis, Cornell, Illinois, Missouri, Penn, Tufts, VMRCVM, Washington, Wisconsin, Edinburgh, Glasgow, RVC, Ross

Experience:
Research: ~450 hours: 5 projects investigating animal behavior in a neurobehavior lab (worked with rats thought to be the first naturally occuring model for bipolar disorder)
Large Animal: ~ 100 hours with a LA vet that did dairy farm calls (lots of autonomy here - including surgery incisions and sutures!)
Small animal: ~ 50 hours shadowing my vet in HS. Then 350 hour volunteership at the Animal Medical Center SA specialty hospital(even though this was marked on my app it started after i submitted so some schools didn't count it!)
Zoo/Wildlife: 300 hours in the Central Park Zoo clinic
Other animal: LOTS of hours (i wrote over 13,000+ but explained this number is impossible to determine) as a puppy raiser for seeing eye dogs.

Recommendations: LVT from Central Park Zoo, LA vet, and HPAC at my undergrad (technically though my HPAC committee required SEVERAL letters so my HPAC was a composite and committee letter that included the coheads of the HPAC (professor and associate dean of the college), 2 science professors, 1 spanish professor, and the greek advisor, as well as a different letter (first draft) from the LA vet - oops so much for 3 letters!)

Large animal: 1 Summer shadowing/assisting general equine practitioner
1 month externship at equine hospital
a few semesters of independent study with equine reproduction specialist
my school has 1st(only?) camelid program in the country, taken a few classes from that
Other Misc. Animal Care: 3+ years of riding/working at barn

Letters of Recc. 1 vet, 2 profs (one is a vet), and 1 from Dean of Honors College

Sorry for changing the topic, but I noticed that several people mentioned high school stuff in their stats like volunteer hours or extracurricular activities. As a high school student, I was wondering if vet schools consider things you did in high school? Or is it all about undergrad?

For real? That's cool - you rock!! Ok... looks like all we need now is a dancing bear and someone who can do vaulting (people who do balancing stunts on horseback, ie: http://youtube.com/watch?v=JQPt4ygv2rk)

Any pre-vet vaulters and odd talents out there want to join our circus for paying tuition? : )

VMCAS directions actually tell you to include HS achievements, extracurriculars, exp etc

I don't vault but I ride bareback pretty well so I could try! :laugh:

Hey, I used to be the lifter on our dances team, I'm sure I could find a juggler and we could have some sort of routine. :laugh:
We need someone with a tent too.

GPA: 3.4 from well-ranked liberal arts school

Double Major: Biology and Studio Art

Science and Cumulative: never calculated it but can't be more than 3.4 or 3.5

GRE: 710 Q, 720 V, 5.0 W

Vet experience: 500 SA, 400 Bovines, 100 Equine

Research: 650, mostly dissection of cow eyes when I worked for a museum

Animal Exp: pet ownership, many hours fostering for SPCA, 25 hrs. shadowing a hoof trimmer, another 25 following a semen salesman, and another 25 doing an AI course for cattle, working in a biolab with reptiles and amphibians at a science museum, attended the AABP conference in Vancouver this year, etc.

But I think what made me stand out was what I have been doing since college: agricultural volunteer for the Peace Corps, teaching English in China, Educator at a Science Museum, raced 2 Ironman triathlons and dozens of shorter ones, 2nd in state in cyclocross racing and triathlon series, raced semi-pro for a local cycling team, captain of the varsity fencing team at school, worked for the state dept. of agriculture, coached high school XC and Basketball squads,worked as a chemist etc. etc. You can do alot between 22 and 33!

Last year I applied to my IS only and did not get in.

This year I applied to:

VA-MD: accepted
Wisconsin: accepted
Minnesota: accepted
Illinois: interview withdrawn because of missing pre-req.
Missouri: rejected because did not have a full semester of coursework taken in the last 5 years.

I don't know where I am going yet, but I am not going to complain about having choices, when I would have been overjoyed with one last year!

Those of you who don't get in this year, take heart. A year can really make a difference if you do what they tell you to do in your rejection interview!😍😍

Not to take a compliment poorly, but I really don't think any of my stats are that outstanding, except maybe the GRE. I sincerely think that a lot of what got me in was novelty value--I wasn't the typical recent college graduate and I have done some interesting things since graduating.

I don't consider there to be anything wrong with this--since I am going to be a great vet regardless of why I got in--but I hope people see my stats and realize that it's not all grades and racking up a million hours of experience. I think they are looking for interesting people too.

Sorry for the mental wandering, I'm old you know.:laugh:

Fargeese, finishing Ironmans alone is mighty impressive, let alone all your other stats! (Especially the swimming part!)

Figure I'll contribute my mediocre stats

First time applicant, 20 years old
GPA: 3.5, science: 3.4 (maybe a bit lower)
GRE: 690 V, 710 Q

Vet Experience: 400 rural mixed practice (with zoo animals as well), 350 SA, 150 Equine

Research: Helped with an equine nutrition study for one semester

Animal Experience: 10 years horseback riding and showing, puppy raiser for service dog, volunteered with sea turtle conservation, worked at the campus wildlife center, shelter volunteer in high school, brief stints leading pony rides and taking care of research hogs

Also held several campus leadership roles and was involved in a few non-animal ECs

Applications:

A&M (IS): accepted!
Mississippi: accepted (declining offer)
Wisconsin: waitlist (will withdraw)
Minnesota: rejected
Penn: rejected

I'm probably bringing down the numbers in this thread, but hopefully it's good to see. I know I was a bit scared after seeing the first few posts!

All you guys talking about mediocre are misinformed about what a normal college student acheives.
I will share mine just for people that do not think they can get in. I will tell you hard work and dedication will get you in.
22 year old male I attended Ohio State for undergrad and will attend OSU for vet school in the fall

Not so hot, but I'll post them anyway. I'm a 3rd time applicant (third times the charm!), 23 year old female. Did undergrad at Auburn (B.S. in Animal Sciences), currently taking courses at South Alabama and online through Southern Miss.

Overall GPA: 3.10-3.12 (from 3 different schools) had a really bad 1st semester freshman year in 2002 (had a 2.35) but managed to make a 3.0 or better ever since, and made Dean's List fall semester of junior year.

Science GPA: about 3.3-3.5, not sure what all is used to calculate it.

last 45 hours: 3.11 I think, had a horrible Immunology teacher. shouldn't have taken the course.

LORs: from a vet I worked with, from U/G scholarship director, from EMS Pharmacology teacher, from U/G advisor/professor

Experience: 6 years in vet clinics as kennel assistant, vet tech, and receptionist; well over 4000 hours; had 2 different jobs at AU vet school - worked with research beagles and research cattle & sheep - at least 250 hours from that; no large animal, except what I got from Animal Science courses

GRE: 1140 both times - Q:630, 600; V:510, 540; A 5.5; 2.5

GPAs weren't great but I did the best I could. They keep basing everything on freshman year 6 years ago.

Nothing too special... but I got into schools, so it must have been good enough.

BA in Biology from Dartmouth
GPA: 3.56 (w/ academic citation in Microbiology - pretty rare)
Last 45 hours: 3.83
Science GPA: ~3.7
GREs: Q 800, V 620

Experience:
SA Clinic: ~300hrs when I applied. I have more now. I have been lucky to be working there at a time when they were short on techs (not lucky for them, I suppose), so I get a lot of hands on experience and pretty much act as a tech. (I also put these on the VMCAS in such a way that many schools read it as ~100 hours because I split it up among the 3 vets I worked with. Oops)
LA: Many 1000s of hours working as an assistant farm manager, trainer, instructor, camp counselor, trail guide, and farm hand at a few farms. Farms mostly had horses, but some cows, llamas, goats, pigs, ducks, chickens, rabbits, and guinea pigs as well. I've been riding and showing for about 16 years, and I have owned 2 of my own horses. I also have been volunteering at a therapeutic riding center nearly as long as I have been riding. I also do some farm sitting.
SA: Extensive pet sitting. I'm the main pet sitting reference from the clinic I work at so I get a lot of geriatric, sick, and medicated pets. I also have the wonderful job of whelping out nearly every litter that is born at the farm I work at back home. I *swear* they plan it so that they're due when I'm home, haha.

Other Work:
-Color genetic consultant: I consult with many horse and dog breeders as to the genetics of their animals and what potential crosses may produce. I've been doing this since high school. There is a much lower demand now that the knowledge of color genetics is more widely known. I have also worked with people concerning OLWS and HYPP.
-Computer science TA
-Genetics study group leader and tutor
-Curves coach in high school (the women's gym - SO much fun! haha)

Extracurriculars:
In lots of groups with the college, but my main one is that I play rugby. I'm on a D1 team and have been on the starting team since sophomore year. I've been the fundraising chair, equipment manager, web designer, and am now the president and treasurer. We're not varisty in order to maintain some freedoms, but that means I pretty much run a small business.

LORs: Vet, professor, and volunteer coordinator from the farm I volunteered and worked at. The owner (and vet) of the clinic I work at also sent in a paper LOR, but a lot of schools don't look at those.

I also wrote in an explanation statement about my GPA because my grades dipped into the B range for a year. That was the year my mom got diagnosed with 3 kinds of cancer and my sister died. So yeah, kinda rough and my academics suffered. I hope the schools have taken that into consideration.

I just found out that I was accepted to LSU SVM today! So, here are my stats...

-1st time applicant
-graduate in May with BS in Animal Science

-GRE: 670 verbal, 460 math (1130) - Math was never my friend... 😳

-GPA's for LSU: Last 45 hours - 3.77, Required Courses - 3.81

-LOR's: 4 veterinarians - 2 SA vets, 1 mixed vet, and 1 vet/college professor (my advisor)

-Experience: ~3000 hours SA/mixed clinic experience, ~35 hours emergency clinic experience, ~200 hours food animal (swine, sheep, goats) experience ((although, this could count as animal experience rather than vet, as I never worked under a vet at this job))

-Misc: I have been involved in leadership positions within clubs (Alpha Zeta - VP, Publicist, Pre-Vet Club - Publicist, VP,& President). I also participated in research projects which were presented to my college.

Application: LSU - accepted

I just don't have that many vet hours which has hurt me. And since I'm OOS for everywhere I worry that my GPA isn't considered that great because my overall is a bit lower. Haha, I'm just hard on myself...

Well hopefully Penn will be as happy with those stats as you two seem to be 🙄

Equine: 13+ years riding hunters and teaching lessons/summer camp, worked through school on a QH breeding farm (~800 hours), hotwalked racehorses for 2 summers (~400 hours), pretty much a horse crazy freak since birth.

So! I should have diversified more, of course, but I definitely want to do equine medicine. I wouldn't recommend being quite so focused, but we'll see if it panned out for other schools beyond Purdue!

Extracurricular: Not much... mostly politics. 4-H & debate in high school.
Awards: Employee of the month. Summa Cum Laude.

And, Projekt, you have GREAT stats! You should definitely be proud!
 
I dunno, Jersey, you sound pretty competitive to me. I think people get too stuck on the fact that they don't have the same kinds of experience as other people. But I think that's actually a very good thing. I don't think you're a "by the skin of your teeth" applicant at all. I think you really sound like you deserve to be where you are and you're going to do fine. Don't work too hard this summer. Way to go!!👍

Your GPA is highly competitive. If it were up to me, I wouldn't consider GRE. (Other readers already know that.)
 
I feel like some kind of awesome victory music should play when this thread is opened....peronally I'd go for the Indiana Jones theme song. OR the Olympics music, that's a good one!

I knew i had pretty good stats, but i was actually surprised by the positive response I had from schools this year. I researched the process well before starting the applications, and I had legitimate reasons for applying to all 7 schools. But i swear it really is luck of the draw. You never can tell exactly what each school is looking for. You can just make yourself the best applicant you can possibly be and apply to schools where you think you have a shot (ie similar acceptance stats) and would be happy. Now if i could just figure out how to make this decision( i am very indecisive).... although i'm definitely not complaining. I'm thankful to have any decision to make. Personal Statement: Talked about the development of my interest in vet med, how I could contribute to the profession in ways other than clinical practice.

I almost was not going to apply because I didn't think that I would get in anywhere. My first response was the rejections from TAMU (which sucked, because I'm in the CVM's undergraduate program right now!), but I wasn't too surprised since I'm OOS. According to one of my professors (who made the admissions committee look at my application again because she thought they made a mistake) my lack of clinical experience killed my app (again, no surpise). I didn't get any credit for the research experience I have. I think Illinois and Purdue liked my research background, however.
 
Thanks for posting your stats polo vet. Aside from my science GPA being a little lower, my stats are really similar to yours so you give me hope for OOS A&M, Penn, and VMRCVM acceptances! 🙂

Do you have any advice about special things that those schools are looking for?
