Hi fellow postbaccs!
I'd like to know if there are members here who went to SFSU for postbacc premed studies - through the formal or informal program - and successfully gained admission to medical schools.
Can you please share a mini-profile - GPA, MCAT scores, what schools you had success with?
I was searching mdapps the other day and didn't turn up a lot of SFSU students/alumni there. I'm hoping to hear some inspiring stories here. 🙂
Thanks!

None, huh?
That's kinda discouraging. 🙁

Yea I'm very interested in hearing comments about this program as well. It's one of the only "free-for-all" programs on the west coast. In the limited reviews I have heard about it, the experiences have been good. Seems like their professors are decent and some of the hard sounding/high-level classes really aren't that bad...which is good news to us GPA enhancers.

i would do a search on SFSU on SDN. there has been a lot of discussion regarding the sfsu, csu east bay, and san jose state programs. unfortunately, i have found that it takes a while for people to respond to posts in this forum, so i think the search and reading old posts is your best bet.
👍
i personally applied to east bay...sfsu was already closed in mid-february due to the anticipated budget cuts. at least this way i have some sort of option if i don't get in to med school come summertime.

I'd like to know too! I've been searching all of the forums on sfsu (even advance search under NONTRAD and POSTBAC), but still nothing on successful SFSU MD applicants. Although, there's a lot of hearsay about how good the program is: "The guy in my class got interviewed...," "I know of several people that got accepted...," etc...

So any profiles would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

A little out of date, but:

a decent and comforting list of succesful applicants from one year (2004). A relatively small proportion of med school applicants actually make mdapps profiles so don't get too worried about the lack of representation- I found about a dozen on there, not a lot fewer than the UC I went to.

Thanks Echidna! I was torn when I found out about the UC Consortium Postbac vs. the SFSU informal postbac.

Think positive everyone! I did three courses as an informal postbacc at SFSU last year and am applying now. I have received a good number of interviews and 3 acceptances as of December.

I did hear that it is much much tougher for informals to get the classes they want now due to new SFSU policies and budget cuts, so keep that in mind.

That list surprises me. You wonder what their GPAs started out at and what kind of internships they were able to find in the city for such an impressive list of private schools.

Very true. This was probably the Formal program too.

Formal program is new, so that list does not include their acceptances.

Data on post-baccs at SFSU is hard to come by; Dr. Rothman's office keeps no official statistics because students must incorporate themselves into the system. A number taking classes around the time that I did were accepted to good schools (UCSF, UC Davis) but a lot of students were flailing for the same reasons they had to do a post-bacc in the first place (poor study habits, too many working hours, etc).

Bottom line for SFSU: crank out a high GPA, volunteer and see what happens. It's definitely possible but no one is going to hold your hand.
