What kind of watches are you guys going with? Im trying to find one that has a big screen with digital time and a comfortable strap, know of any?
Also, it's kind of nice to remember that almost every patient you see in medical school and residency is going to be poor, so wearing a super expensive watch is maybe a little obnoxious.
hmmm nice watch and not a bad priceThe reason people say go with a sweep second hand is that it makes it slightly easier to take vitals. It's easier to visualize the hand moving 1/4 or 1/2 way around the dial than saying, did I start timing at 37 seconds, wait . . . 37+15 is 52, crap, it just passed 52, wait was it really at 37 seconds or 33 . . . or you know, just wait until you're at a simple time like 15 sec, 30, 45, etc.
I like my Seiko chronograph titanium. I'd shy away from the more expensive watches just because I shy away from bringing anything (too) expensive with me to the hospital.
I'm assuming you're an adult, which means you should wear an adult watch, which means no digital. Sorry.
bah!
all these anti-digital people don't know what they're talking about! i have a g-shock (exact same one, coincidentally, that tom-tom wore in MI2) that i've been wearing for 7 years. i hike and camp in the woods, surf, skydive and just about anything else with this watch. it is the bada55 of all watches. plus, it's easy to take a pulse and has a timer that i use for keeping track of time during tests.
go with g-shock, those metal watches are for sissies.
I once totally nailed a really rare diagnosis on a patient and saved his life, and at the time I was a fairly fresh junior medical student. Everyone was pretty impressed and the patient was grateful because nobody else on the team really had an idea as to what was going on at first. But the next day he noticed I was using a digital watch to count his respirations, and he asked that he get someone "a little more grown up" to see him for the rest of his stay.
Then he noticed that the clock in his room was digital and he left "AMA" and died in the parking lot trying to find a more "grown up" hospital.
It was all very sad, but understandable. Can't blame the guy, really. How dare time be presented in anything but an analog format? It's a true sign of immaturity.
Two words: Calculator. Watch.

love how no one else sports a rolex 😀
too bad i'm not a premed anymore, and last i checked, i didnt see blue collar workers wearing rolexs
For life, style, whatever, I don't know. For medical school, any watch with a second hand will do. Analog's a little easier for timing, but digital works too. Also, it's kind of nice to remember that almost every patient you see in medical school and residency is going to be poor, so wearing a super expensive watch is maybe a little obnoxious.
If as a premed you go into the hospital thinking that your status is defined by your wrist watch you are in for a world of hurt.
Sorry to chime in, but, as a member of the fashion police, digital watches are simply not allowed. Seriously, digital watches were cool thirty years ago.
🙂

A Rolex is not a watch...... is a Rolex.
But the watch to have is a Patek Philippe. It should only set you back a couple of hundred thousands.
if paulson, the country's most powerful man at the moment, wears a digital watch, i think it's all right for the OP to do the same...
life isn't all about appearances.
