What method of transportation do you use to shuttle between different locations in the city where you are interviewing? Also, how do you find out which buses/shuttles are available…hey I am on a small budget.

Post the cities and you'll get better advice, yo.

Is it really necessary to stay in a hotel overnight before an interview?

Definetely depends where you're interviewing...I rented a car for some of my less urban schools which only tacked on about $10 for the trip? But living in Philadelphia, for some of the schools it makes much more sense just to use public transit and I'd never rent a car here?

how about best modes in baltimore, syracuse, chicago and lexington?

Chicago=public transit

Why don't you do the logical thing and call the schools you're interviewing at...they will know where the best/cheapest (possibly free host) lodging is, and, as local residents, their office staff will know what the best transportation deal is too.

Definitely use public transportation in Chi-town, though...you're a fool if you don't. Compared to the NYC subway it is a ****ty ride quality, and their stations look like bomb shelters from cold war russia, but it's dirt cheap.

PS> Don't put a $20 in the metro card machine--they don't give change, they'll just give you a card charged with $20...you only need $2 or so for a one-way ride anywhere in town.

Also...just google something like "Baltimore Public Transportation SYstem"...every city with enough routes to get you from airport to school will have their route map online...along with info on fares/schedules.
