I've been reading more lately about the suicide rate in medicine (and dentistry) and I am curious.
In all the studies I have read, suicide is correlated with the types of abuse and belittling that are rampant in medical education.
But I wonder if there is also a component of the doctor as empath that can only take so much pain in when caring for so many. I wonder if there is a different thing to offer to medical students and residents other than meditation for stress management. Is there something different for learning to leave the patient in the room without becoming cold and hard and disinterested in medicine?
What are your thoughts on this? Do more suicidal-prone people choose medicine, or does medicine make people suicidal? What do you think is the best way for students (and faculty) to manage their emotions and survive medical training?
