Summer between 1st and 2nd year

Hey SDNers,
I am a first year having survived the first semester. (applause) My query is what to do in between 1st and 2nd year. I am interested in going to a great city like San Francisco and spending a month volunteering at a hospital and hanging out in the town. I wouldn't mind doing some research or possibly learning some Spanish.
Does anyone have any ideas about opportunities for med students specifically in San Francisco or any other major cities?
How about in Europe?
