Summer Classes

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Taking western civ 2 and calc 2 at my new school THE Ohio State University. I wont be living in columbus until autumn though...just driving down on tues and thurs for the time being.

I'm taking English... I need to get rid of GEs! Oh well... I figure it's better to do it during the summer than the school year since I'll have more time to devote to it. I won't be tied up with a bajillion science classes. 🙂

I'm taking Physics this summer. It sucks, but I need it for P-Chem (and premed, obviously). Oh well, only 6 more weeks of it and I'm done!

General Chemistry I and II...who can argue w/ getting 4 credits in only 3.5 weeks?

Im taking organic chem 1 and 2 at rutgers this summer. Fun stuff huh? I now get a whole 3 weeks of summer!

I'm taking comparative religions (over on the 30th thank goodness - the subject is interesting, but the prof is boring!), biopsych, and Calc I this summer.

Im taking Chem 2. The course is not fun because of the labs (that ****ing suck like all labs), And the lecture is boring and useless for the most part.... The course is 12 hours a week So I figure about 2/3 of it goes down the ****ter uselessly. Blah. ALso I have problems studying at home so it is going to be a real test of disclipine to do well. (meaning A). 7 weeks..... Ahhh!

I'm taking intermediate spanish, math, and a humanities (death & dying w/ a lab), all online. This may have not been one of my better decisions...

Organic II (again). I had a LOT of problems when I took it in the spring, and didn't do so well, although I did pass.

I decided, given the maturity changes I experienced over the summer, I would rather just jump in, deal with it for 6 weeks, and be done with it.

I don't know why some people are against summer classes...I just took my chemistry final and am glad to say I finished gen chem I in a month's time...
Who wouldn't rather take, say Orgo, in the summer when the class size is much smaller (~10 people), and more of a one on one relationship with the professor, and only 1 subject to devote one's attention to?

and if you take it at your normal college it'll appear normal on your transcript...who can argue?

It's not being against summer courses, its the medical admission boards that are sometimes against them because they feel you dont learn as much in a summer course as you would in a full semester course, and some feel that summer courses are sometimes easier.

Really?? I never thought about like that..😕

 Tell them to take either Orgo, Physics, or Econ during the summer at Duke. They'll change their f-ing minds! Summer classes aren't any easier than classes taken during the school year...they just go by super fast.

Hee hee ... I was a TA and tutor for summer econ classes at Duke--I second this notion. I took orgo during the summer at Univ. SC, and it was no picnic. Adcoms didn't seem to care one way or the other, though.

I took Inorganic II during the summer, and am schedule to retake organic II this summer. Should I drop it and pick it up in the fall?

By the way, which professor did you have for your summer organic class, Vie?

I had Handey for Orgo II--he was great. Had Bryson for Orgo I--he has no business being anywhere near a classroom.

If you think your trouble with orgo had to do with the compressed schedule, maybe you should drop it. I liked getting them out of the way in the summer, but I don't know that I would want to do it twice.

I had Handy for Organic II as well, but the first time I took it was in the Spring. I did poorly mainly because I was convinced I wanted to drop premed, and since organic wasn't required for what I wanted to do, I pretty much quit studying. I was failing the course until near the end of the semester when, after some soul searching, I decided to stick with med school. I had to literally bust my ass to bring my grade up from an F to a D, and almost a C.

I didn't have any problems with inorganic II in the summer. Usually I end up just sitting around doing nothing anyways, so the huge timesink would be welcome. Plus, I'm signed up for biochem, physics, and some other junk in the fall and really don't want organic along with them.

i am takin intro to managerial econ, econometrics, endocrinology and economics of development...the summer looks like a regular semester.

I think this only applies to summer courses taken at community colleges or colleges with significantly less prestige than your current UG institution. It might seem like you were afraid to take the class at your college for some reason. However, this is all based solely on what I have read.

I think you're right. That's why my school throws a hissy everytime someone takes classes such as physics at another school. Gee...I wonder why soooooo many people choose to do so 🙄 (and not just struggling students)...maybe that's a hint that they should change the way the classes are structured!

I'm taking calc 3. The prof is really awful, and he's making us race through stuff a mile a minute. I wish I could have taken it during the regular semester!
