Summer course

Do you have to report a summer course/transcript when applying that was not taken at your regular 4 year university? It was at an out of state university. I only took one class there. I also failed it the first time. But the second time I got a c. This was in 2001. I was a freshman. Should I retake it at my current school ( Community college) because it was so long ago? I am aware that you must submit all coursework completed but what if it didn't take place at your regular university/state?
( I did a forum search on my title thread but unable to find the answer- it seems like most people take the summer courses at their current uni)

Per AAMC guidelines, you have to report every college level course that you take from every institution that you ever attended (even if it is just one class). It doesn't matter if you completed the course, if you were registered and it appears on any official enrollment documentation, you must report it. When you submit your application, your self-reported records will be compared against a clearing house to make sure you are listing every school. Leaving off a school (even by accident) is very, very serious.

As for retaking, it depends on what the course was and what your other grades were. 2001 is a long time ago...

It was Calculus. I did horrible freshman year. I left after my first sophomore semester in 2001.

Some schools will require math, others will not. Depending on what your cGPA and sGPA is, it could be useful to retake it.

It could be worse, you could be in my situation where you have to report courses you didn't actually even take because your employer had a kickback program with the school to give you credit for "work experience" in exchange for govt money

A small government institution you might have heard of known as the U.S. Army 😀

My primary MOS was as a lab tech, for which I went through an Army school at Fort Sam Houston for 52 weeks (26 weeks in the classroom, 26 weeks in clinical OJT). GWU then, in contract with the Army, proceeded to assign me 60 semester hrs at a flat B for their MLT program. Thus, even though I've never been to GWU, never met a GWU professor, and never registered for a class at GWU, I have 60 semester hours on their ACH transcripts that I must report. I graduated 3rd in my class of 200+ for that program (and the attrition rate was > 60%) and also never had anything lower than a 90% in any section. Unfortunately, the whole course credit was either pass/fail; if you passed you got awarded a B and if you failed you didn't get anything - including no GWU credits. Ironically, it would have been to my benefit if I instead failed the program since I would then never have had the hours assigned

Thankfully, with regard to Texas schools I'm able to use the academic fresh start and throw out those grades, but they will still hurt my GPA tremendously for out of state schools. Without the GWU credits I have 101 hrs after this semester at a 3.94; with them it drops to a 3.59.

Only for public schools and it takes some jumping through hoops to make happen. Texas, like most states, also has predominately allopathic schools which, at least anecdotally , seem to demonstrate a much stronger age bias in their admissions. I have zero doubt that without those stupid GWU credits I would easily gain acceptance into a D.O. program somewhere in the country as my age (41) would not be as much of an issue. However, when that 3.94 turns into a 3.59 it means I am probably going to have to be a really high splitter on the MCAT to be considered at out of state D.O. schools. It is what it is though and I'm in the best state regarding my situation so I'm just going to make sure I'm thoroughly prepared for the MCAT.

There has to be a spot on the application where you can provide an explanation and offer documentation for those credits, like a letter from whoever ran that program explaining how the system worked and what your actual performance and class standing was. It might take extra work and time, but contacting the schools you are applying to about this would be worth it in your case, especially considering the huge difference it makes in your overall GPA. You might want to check with @QofQuimica on her approach contacting schools about her rather unique undergrad background and grade (or in her case, lack thereof) situation.

Thanks, I'll send her a msg. I've definitely considered trying to contact GWU and/or AMEDD but I graduated from that program over 20 years ago so I'm not too confident they will have any record of me even being there. The Army doesn't even have a record of my DD-214 anymore; luckily I not only kept several copies of it, I also registered it with the Bexar county clerk when I got out.

Rather than contacting the individual med schools, I suggest that you contact all three of the app services (assuming you're applying to TX, DO, and MD), explain the situation, and ask for their advice regarding how to correctly report these grades. Because I think it would be more accurate to report all of your army grades as "pass" rather than as Bs. And I can tell you that AMCAS at least does have a provision for reporting P/F coursework for zero credit hours, which is how I had to report all of my own UG work from my hippie college.

Edit: to answer the OP's question, yup, you gotta report it and get an official transcript. Doesn't matter how many classes you took at that institution; if it was post-secondary, it goes on your app. I even had to report my CC classes taken while I was still in HS on AMCAS when I applied.

OK great, I will contact them and see if they have any input. Its interesting how my GWU transcripts have changed over the years as well. I have a copy of the transcripts from 2007 and on those the courses are marked something to the tune of "off campus contract," however, the copies I got in 2016 now just show regular course numbers; though the course numbers are outdated (most are not classes they currently offer).

Heh. Fortunately I got As in both of my HS CC classes. But since my UG didn't use credit hours, it made me look like I was applying to med school as a first semester freshman on AMCAS....

I had like 22 credits at the CC. Should've been As but weren't
