Hi,
Im a junior desperately in need of experience in the medical field. I volunteered this past summer at a hospital and i worked in a clinical laboratory as well. However, i have no direct contact with physicians and would like to actually see a doctor at work.

1.Does anybody know where i can find such an internship or if shadowing programs or conspicuously available at hospitals?
2.How did you guys get your shadowing experience
3. What did you think of it
Thank You

-Contact a local physician or hospital and ask to "shadow" as a prospective medical student.

-Volunteer in the ER.

-Contact a local medical school and ask for shadowing opportunities.

I suggest boston health care for the homeless program as a volunteer.

I did this for a few years before applying to med school and it was the ticket that got me in. Try to work in McInnis house which is a pseudo hospital for the homeless. With time you will soon be doing checkups and histories.

Then you have great material for your personal statement and in your interviews just remember bhchp and you will be fine.

If you have more time go abroad and volunteer with people even worse off. This is the best ticket.

www.google.com

Seriously. I found a lot of compiled lists of available summer research internships. If you need a doctor to shadow, ask your regular family doctor to refer you to a specialist you could shadow. I'm sure he would know someone who would be willing to let you.

Also try contacting the pre-med/ pre-professional office at your school. They should have a list of internships/ volunteer opportunities available. I actually just got an email the other day from my school announcing their list of summer opportunities. Also, you could try contacting the career office of your school if you're looking for docs to shadow. My school maintains a "career advisory network" of people in all different professions available to discuss their field with students.
Good luck to you! :luck:
