I was curious if anyone out there had any information about summer job opportunities aboard for students just completing their first year of medical school. Right now I'd like to get a job in England for the summer but I don't even know where to start. I had a meeting with our school?s counselor but she wasn't much help. The job would have to at least appear to relate to medicine. Beyond that I?ll take any advice, information or general comments.

Thanks

Hey deadwood. Sorry I can't help, but I am also looking to do something medically related in England (London, specifically) for the summer. I am trying to find a job or some kind of research, but that might be tough. I may just end up trying to find a "regular" job in a pub or something, and then volunteering in a hospital. Let me know if you find any worthwhile opportunities.

I went to England, London, this summer after my 1st year. I had the time of my life. I had a work visa and worked in a bar in London. I had nothing to do with medicine for 3 months! It was so awesome. I met tons of friends from all over and was able to see england from the "inside" not as a tourist. On the weekends we would travel all over Europe and come back for work on monday. I would highly recomend this to anyone. And don't worry about all your friends that are doing research or medical crap. You can always take an international elective your 4th year if you want. This will be your ONLY summer off for a LONG time, and you'll never have the oppurtunity to do anything like this again. Since you'll have a job while you're there the whole trip is really doable money-wise. If your interested check out this website or send me an email. I'd be glad to tell anybody aboout it.

also, look through AMSA, or contact your local rep from them for advice.

You can work as Health Care Assistants in hospitals - some people really enjoy it, some don't. Pays peanuts.

If you are competent at ECGs and can get some references saying that, they you can join an agency and be a locum cardiographer (this is what I do) - one agency to try is www.mediplacements.com. Pay is good 😉 (?11/hr)

Bar work/shop work/McDonald's can be had anywhere at any time. Just arrive and go door to door.

If you've got queries PM me and I'll try and help.

I would be interested in finding out more about this program. I have looked over the website, seems cool, but doesn't give you many details on how you find a job before you get there.

If you want to work abroad, contact the embassy or consulate and the tourist office of the country in which you want to work. Consult their telephone directories and yellow pages for addresses of companies in your field. Professional or skilled people have a better chance of getting jobs abroad. For example, doctors, architects, teachers, computer programmers etc can sometimes find work within their profession by answering advertisements in newspapers and by writing direct to companies and by registering with an appropriate recruitment agency.
