I have taken a year off and worked most of these last few months and am ready to quit my job once summer hits. With school starting in August, I just wanted to get a feel for what you guys are going to do? I refuse to study and I have several G's in the bank that I feel are expendable (even in these harsh economic times). Is it wiser for me to save this cash or just blow it on a summer of traveling and decadence?

Thoughts? I guess most of you are pre-meds like me but input from med students would be helpful also. I just know school is going to suck and I don't want to have any regrets before I start.

It will probably serve you better to save those few grand for when school begins. You're still on your own for a brief period before the loan money kicks in. 😉

If you have another few grand apart from that few grand though...I would say splurge on some awesome vacation.

Personally, I'm going on a 9-day cruise in June hitting Bermuda, San Juan, St. Thomas, and Grand Turk. 😀

The rest of the summer will be spent having a social life, since I don't expect to have one starting in August. 🙁

A cruise sounds fun. I realize it would ultimately be better to save the few grand I have but honestly, I know I will be in huge debt no matter what I decide so I think I will splurge a bit.

I got rejected from OUCOM's SURF 🙁

No problem with taking a cheap cruise! There are tons of "last minute" travel sites where you can book a trip for under a grand or even MUCH less depending on where you want to go and for how long! Vacations are a GREAT way to prepare for medical school, haha--I'm taking 2 myself this summer.

Go have some fun, don't waste your time studying. I think that relaxing and enjoying life for a few months is the perfect way to prepare for medical school. That way, you will be rejuvenated and ready to hit school with all you have.

Have fun, and drink a beer for me (if you enjoy such a vice)!

As long as you have a comfortable financial base to fall back on for med school, go ahead and do whatever you want. I'm also refusing to study this summer, but I have to work for a little bit to have enough emergency funds for the next four years.

Don't blow all of your money, though. You may need to cover some expenses before your financial aid check comes in, so be prepared for that.

That's a good point, a bit of buffer money never hurts.

hi, i want to take a pretty easy summer too. i was looking into cruises and i cant really find any. what are some good websites to find last minute (cheap) cruises?

i'll see you in class semicolon!😀😀

Hey I'm in the exact same situation as you... and I'm really thinking hard about backpacking central america between june and august. Tickets from the midwest (where i'm from) range from 300 to 400 bucks depending on where you fly into (guatemala city or managua). Youth hostels are really fun to stay at and go for 5 to 7 bucks a night. Restaurants are super cheap, and you can always go to the mercados and eat fruit and bread for a few cents. It would be a lot of fun and a cheap way to blow off some steam before buckling down and hitting the books in the fall. The only problem is finding people to go with... 😀

Blow the money. Go to Vegas, live like a king for as long as the G's will carry you, leave satisfied.

I'm going to enjoy myself to the fullest. Then about one week prior to school I'm going to try and piece together what happened from the pictures that were taken😉

Hahaha in all seriousness I'm gonna be stuck finishing up a summer school spanish class until July. Other than that I'm gonna have a good time and focus on trying to get moving, new apartment, loans, books and all the other jibberish needed for school squared away. Hopefully I can fit some time visiting family and friends in there.

I used http://www.americandiscountcruises.com for my cruise; cost me 850/person and I got 100 onboard credit.

See ya in August, dude (unless you join the FB group and decide to come to a meet-up). 😀

I told myself I'm gonna stay at my job until the end of June. Its not exactly intellectually challenging. Boring as **** but at least it'll be a few extra $ in my pocket.

LECOM starts early (July 25th) so not gonna have much of a summer between commencement (May 22nd) and school. I'll try to enjoy it as much as possible.

So far my plans are planning my wedding for next summer (i really don't want to think about it during school next year!~hopefully this will be possible~)& figuring out everything as far as moving across the country for school...

I'll need to find something fun to mix in there!

lol for me... 850 is pricey. i'll take a look though... and i wont be going to any nycom gatherings until after may 22 (graduation day). im missing out on all the bonding.

Two words:

Road trip.

I so agree with. Looks like everyone is having fun this summer while I'm stuck taking classes. I messed up in school before and I guess I'm paying for it now. Taking cal and a&p 2 for the first half. Second half cal 2 and microbiology. I know its gonna be so harsh but on the bright side I'm only going to have 2 semesters left and the community college whoo hoo.

Congrats hope you can balance something with the wedding and school.

Built a deck, stop working June 2, going to Kenya on a mission trip for 2 weeks, backpacking in the northwest, heading to Iowa for a week to look for apartments, hosting a kids cabin at kids camp for a week... oh yeah, and who even thought about studying? No amount of studying will get anyone prepared right now for medical school (unless you have classes to take). Have FUN this summer, before having FUN (a different kind of fun in a twisted way) in medical school!
