Hi All,

For those of you who have come to know me through SDN... this first part is not realyl for you.
I applied--got 3 interviews (MWU, temple, BU) and am still waiting to hear back.

Therefore, I am making plans to reapply. Do you all think it would beOK for me to not do a post bacc?
i have a sub 3.3 GPA both science and overall. I have good DAT scores (this is what I owe my interviews to). My state school is Ohio state.
I really don't want to waste $$ on a post bacc if I don't have to-- and since I did get interviews I don't see why I wouldn't get any next cycle as long as I did something. I> was thinking about working for Kaplan (or another job maybe) and doing volunteer work.

What are your opinions on this? Just curious. My GPA isn't hot...... but I did get interviews with it. I am a bio major so I did take upper level bios already.... what do yo uthink? Any input would be welcome!

Take as many upper level courses as you can over the next year. I'm sure you can get that GPA up there without worrying about masters.

I am grduating and prefer not to take any more courses if possible. What do you think? For me, it is mostly about spending the extra $$ when it seems unnecessary......

Hey Dentgirl, if you don't mind me asking, what were your stats for the DAT? I have yet to take the DAT(applying for the upcoming cycle), but I'm pretty much in the same boat as you gpa wise, so I'm pretty scared myself, haha.

Btw, good luck! I hope you get accepted soon!

Hey my Dat was 20/20/20
with 24 RC
22 orgo
18 gen chem
20 bio
20 pat
18 Qr

I applied late september so...... apply early!!!

i think u should either take more classes to boost that gpa if u're worried about it, or get a job as a dental assistant. that way u have something to say at the interviews on ur year off. but with ur stats, im sure u'll get somewhere if u apply early this time....but good luck i hope u get in this yr.

I dunno if getting a job as a dental assistant is what you would consider if you plan on not using any money....at least here in MN, you are required to go to classes for dental assisting and that could be from 2-3 years depending on the college.

Maybe you could take a few more science classes as a non-degree student for fall semester. Take highly recommended courses like Immunology, Histology, Human Physiology, etc if you haven't taken them yet. They'll help boost your GPA, and it'll show adcom that you're really committed to dentistry. Also continue shadowing and doing volunteer work! Good luck to you 🙂

I feel like you will get in in the summer, but if you are unfortunate in receiving acceptance, I think just reapplying early and submitting in early June will get the ball rolling for you.

kind of the same boat as me, had 2 interviews and still waiting to get in. (your dat is better than mine)

I know you were a bio major so have taken many upper level science classes. so the 3 things i would do (and may have to) are:

1. take 1 or 2 more bio classes that you have not already taken (get A's)
2. do more volunteering, shadowing, leadership activities....
3. apply like the first day of the cycle.

hopefully we will both get in, but if not i think the above 3 things will def get you in next cycle

What did OSU say at your reapplicant meeting? Did they give you a good impression that you'll get in next cycle?

Rather than work for Kaplan, which is usually ~15hrs/week if that, I would get a full time job to make some money, maybe dental assisting or something with your degree. There are no necessary credentials in Ohio that I'm aware of, you just have to find a dentist where you are willing to train you. good luck

I know that where I'm from you dont have to have any degree to assist. But you can't prophy for 2 years. so you could do some chairside operatory assisting or just help in the office any way you can.

I am a reapplicant and the main thing that I got from my denials was continue to try and improve in any way possible.. Finish out strong with a good GPA this semester and then you can say that your GPA went up.. If you are comfy with the DAT maybe try it again and if you do better or even the same it shows determination. Also get as much experience and volunteer. All the things that are important to them, you should make some attempt to get better in, thats what lets them know you are serious. Find out what they focus on and zone in on that too.

I did not take one course after I got my BA degree in DEC 07 and I got in my second try (this round).. Obviously I am not the conventional re-applicant but It can happen... Stay in touch with them and remember ppl you met at your interviews. I remembered like four ppl this year at my interview from last year and approached them all and re-introduced myself. They all remembered me too surprisingly! Good luck.
