are there any books you guys wished you had read before you started school? and no, I don't mean medical textbooks....

I started reading things that were not really related to medicine, like biographies of historical figures and old religious texts. I'd recommend doing something like that.

While a great book, maybe a little too depressing for someone about to walk into the meat grinder. Save H.O.G. for later, after you start getting a little digruntled with the process.

I recommend "when the air hits your brain" by Frank Vertosick, MD. A real interesting read by a neurosurgeon who recounts his residency and isn't ultra gunner/enthusiastic, but comes to like what he is doing.

I found "Complications a Surgon's Notes on an Imperfect Science" and "Walk on Water The Miricle of Saving Children's Lives" both to be good if you are looking for medical reading. For non medical reading, playboy is good.

Technically these are probably textbooks but I wish I had asked my school more about our clinical course and went ahead and did all the readings. We have 60+ pages to read per session and it's always rushed. I'm definitely getting a copy of the reading assignments for 2nd years and do the readings during the summer. It'll save you a lot of grief.

Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews will give you a good general background in any subject that you feel you might struggle in (or really want to do well in). Lippincott's Biochemistry BRS book is a good read especially if your biochemistry background is lacking. BRS Anatomy is also a good book as is High Yield Embryology. Trying to memorize the little details at this point will be mostly a waste of time but attaining a broad understanding of the subjects will prove helpful. Spending some time on the beach also will prove helpful as medical school really sucks.

Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy.....#1 New York Times Bestseller

We all got copies of "On Doctoring" which I found to be depressing and uninspiring more often than motivating.

Read whatever interests you.

I also highly recommend "Complications". I read it a year before I started school and I recommend it to everyone I know that has to go to the doctors - everyone.
