Hi,

I am student with a management degree taking science classes with the goal of attending medical school. I will have the pre-reqs completed this year and I plan on taking a few upper level biology classes next year while studying for the MCAT. My goal is to apply summer of 2016.

There is an opportunity at my university to do research in Alaska this summer. The research is on climate change and the affects it has on plants. The position is paid and is field work based. If I do not participate in the research program I most likely will take anatomy and physiology 1 and 2 (100 level).

I am wondering if this opportunity is worth it if my goal is to attend medical school?

Thank you for any input

The opportunity is worth it if you are genuinely interested in the research program, and I do think it's kind of a once-in-a-life-time thing since you likely won't have time to do something similar once you start medical school. I personally despised summer courses, especially since the summer semester usually ends a week before fall semester starts at my school, leaving no time for relaxation. Sometimes, you just need that change of scene to avoid being burnt out from all the studying. Also consider that since you have one more year until the actual applications, you will have plenty of time to do any shadowing, volunteering, community service, etc. during your school year.

Granite I am an OMS-0 (meaning accepted, but yet to gain any experience) but I've been told taking a human anatomy class in undergrad is very very helpful. Ultimately I think pursuing that research opportunity is awesome, it's certainly something cool to discuss during interviews, but possibly fit in that anatomy class you mentioned somewhere in your last Fall/Spring semester. Seeing that class on your transcript will appeal to ADCOMs.

Research in Alaska is quite unique. Unique is good.

Best of luck!
