Thought I'd start one so we can all share. I just got accepted into the MIT Summer Research Program in Biology. I was pretty stoked because I didn't expect to hear from them till next month. Just got the email today. 😀😀😀

seriously consider the Hopkins SIP. I did the pulmonary one and it was downright amazing! The absolute best experience I have had as an undergrad.👍

I got into UCSD Amgen, UIowa pharmacology, Princeton MOL/QCB program.

Omega when did you hear from UCSF? I haven't heard anything yet... I'm guessing I didn't get in.

I am also waiting on Columbia, Mayo, WashU, etc...
 
I have a feeling the fact that I'm not hearing from these places means I didn't get in. I applied to UCSD Amgen as well 🙁
 
How did you guys find out about these programs?
 
I don't know that much about the program admin specifics, but if they didn't want you they would probably have outright rejected you. You are probably an alternate as of right now, and since I will not likely be accepting the UCSD one a spot will open up pretty soon!

The reason I think this is because a friend of mine was rejected from a program I applied to, and I hadn't heard anything at all. I emailed the people and they said I was on a waitlist and would hear back once people accepted/declined their offers. Sending them an email won't hurt, and you might find out that you're actually on a wait list...

If you mean how did we find they exist: I think it was a google search for summer biomedical research internships or something to that effect. There is a site with a huge amount of internships... maybe through rit.edu

If you mean how did we find out if we were accepted:
Iowa: Email and snail mail
UCSD: Phone call and email
Princeton: Email

I heard from the UCSF Amgen Scholars Program on 03/06.

I got my acceptances mostly by e-mail, except for St. Jude POE, in which I got a phone call from the director.

It's still pretty early...most programs are still giving out acceptances.
 
I've gotten into UCSD Amgen, Columbia Amgen, UCSF Amgen, University of Chicago USSRI, and Harvard-MIT HST Summer Institute. Debating between SoCal and Boston right now. Still haven't heard back from a few but I'm really crossing my fingers for Berkeley Amgen to come through.

I have a general question: I applied to a few of these Amgen sites without knowing much about the program. Is being an Amgen Scholar really a big deal and as prestigious as they make it out to be? I know they claim they get like 600 apps for ~30 spots, but so does every other decent research program around the nation.

Seven87, if you're not going to UCSD, where are you going? The only downside of UCSD is that I'm a little disappointed that it's only an 8-week program.
 
Okay that makes sense, I guess a lot of places offer admittance to people and wait for them to accept/decline the offer and then move forward from there.

UCSD gave me a very short window to accept their offer. Because I still want to wait and hold out for some other programs, UCSF for instance, I am thinking about not accepting the offer. It would be a great experience, I'm sure, but thats my reasoning.


Anyone else know how prestigious being an Amgen scholar is?? Would it be more than going to Princeton for the summer?
 
I would definitely think princeton's program is more prestigious. But I'm not sure how Amgen compares to the other ones. It has like a 5% acceptance rate though.
 
I am in at UWash's Amgen program. Does anyone have any prior Amgen experience? I am really interested in what can be said beyond the FAQs on the sites.
 
When did you hear from UWash?? I haven't heard from them...
 
I heard from UWash yesterday 3/14. I pretty excited about the program, I just wish I knew more about what I'm getting into. I'm also still waiting to hear back from UCSD, UCSF, and Columbia - who knows what they're up to. I haven't had any contact from them.
 
If you have questions about the programs, I would just call or email them. I wasn't clear about UCSD's program so I just asked them about it.

I'm not sure if the other programs are the same, but at UCSD Amgen funds you but you don't actually do any work for them. You go to a PI and ask them if they have room for an undergrad in their lab for however many weeks. They don't pay you anything, so that's an incentive for them to do it.

I think most of the programs are really competitive. The NYU one I applied to had about 1100 apps for 30 spots. I think that was the most competitive one so far... I would imagine most have from a 5% to 10% acceptance rate. I'd be surprised if a program had more than a 10% acceptance rate.
 
hmmm I seee, I'll definitely look into it. Does anyone know if NIH offers better programs/are more prestigious? I'm not sure if the person posting above was referring to NIH's prestige or not...
 
i got into the ucsf amgen one. already accepted. who else here is going?? let's be friends! 😀

havent heard back from the columbia or the ucberkeley or UW amgen sites.. guessing i got rejected from those. 🙄 i sort of really liked the uw one too.

got a phone call message from ucsd amgen, but need to call them back to know my status?? 😵
 
omega, did you have to accept the ucsf thing yet?? they gave me a really short time window, and since i got waitlisted at the ucla site and rejected by mit and stanford, i just accepted thinking that i would get rejected elsewhere.

You guys that got into a bunch of em are ridiculous!!! I have only been accepted to 1, at Penn State SURIP. I'm essentially 1/10 with a few more left to hear back from. Congrats to those who have a basket of places to choose from!

did you live in the dorms that are 2 miles away from the actual campus?? how much work was there to do on average? like did you have time after research to go and play in cali or was it come back from research and do more stuff in the room? .. 🙄

I said no to UCSD yesterday. Hopefully someone here gets that spot!

Anyone apply to or participate in Iowa's MSTP SUMR program? I got in today... haven't really decided what to do...
 
anyone apply to MD Anderson SURP? I dont think we find out acceptance til mid April

I got e-mailed last week. I had not contacted them since sending in the application and references.

Hi everyone, I was an Amgen scholar last summer through the University of Washington. It was amazing!! If anyone has any questions about it, feel free to pm me. And yeah, don't ask about the Lake Tahoe trip, you just had to be there.
 
oh, and for those wondering about the prestige of the Amgen scholars program, I'd consider it to be pretty prestigious. I'm finishing up interviews to med schools right now, and it has come up on every interview. It has definitely helped make me more competitive. So far I have 5 acceptances and 2 waitlist positions and....no rejections!

rejected by Mayo... I only applied to 4x now 1x down 🙁 lol... what undergrad institutions do you guys go to.. lol to get that much acceptances...

btw has anyone heard back from UT southwestern programs yet?

I turned down all my Amgen acceptances for the Harvard/MIT HST Summer Institute. Anyone else going there this summer?

Also, has anyone gotten into Amgen UC-Berkeley? It was the only Amgen site I wanted, but they still haven't told me their decision, so I withdrew.

after you log in with your PIN etc you should be able to see it... probably means you are waitlisted... the 3.65 GPA is killing me right now.. should be up to a 3.7 after this semester!

actually most of these research programs seem to be geared towards those considering applying for MD-PhD... anyone know of any great summer research programs for those going the MD route and looking for a strong summer research? jhu's sip looks interesting..

Yes, most if not all are geared towards PhD or MD/PhD. If I were you, I would apply to the programs saying that you are in fact hoping to do a MD/PhD and then write genuinely about a research interest of yours. I intend to get an MD but I've gotten into 2 summer research programs and I did SMDEP last year.
 
If you don't want to do research and just want to beef up your application, you probably shouldn't apply. I applied because I am thinking about MD/PhD and if I go the MD-only route I want to end up in an academic setting doing research in addition to seeing patients.
 
well, i'm not applying to simply 'beef up' my application; i clearly stated that i was looking a 'strong summer research' experience. and i'm interesting in both clinical and basic science research but i won't know if i want to do any type of research as part of a career unless i try my hand in the field.
