Hi, I'm an MS1 who's leaning slightly towards surgery, but trying to keep my options open (i.e., doing things that look best on my CV for the greatest number of specialties). Of course, within the realm of research, I'd like to do something I'm interested in as well.

I'm deciding which research projects to apply for, but I'm having trouble discerning what attributes are important.

  • Does the nature/department of the project matter? As in, should I be looking mainly at research projects that pertain to surgery?
  • What is the value of basic science research vs clinical research? What is the value of less traditional projects - medical illustrations, motivational interviewing, kids' summer camps, etc?
  • How important is getting a publication? first/second author?
  • What questions should I should ask during interviews?

Advice on things to look for when selecting a project would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Any research is good research. Clinical research is more likely to get published.

Unless you have a very specific surgical subspecialty in mind you can pretty much get involved in any field of surgery or medicine's research and it looks good no matter what.
