Hi everyone!

I was recently accepted to do a biomedical research internship at a hospital over the summer; however, in my home lab, my PI is requiring students who wish to complete an honors thesis during senior year to stay on campus and work on it over the summer. I was really hoping to do the internship since the research seems to be directly related to healthcare, and I would have the opportunity to learn about a variety of health professions (and ultimately decide whether I wish to pursue an MD, PhD, or MD/PhD degree) while I'm there. I also would really like to complete a thesis during my senior year, because I really enjoy my research and would like something to show for it. I've heard that a senior thesis isn't as important as other factors for med school, but it might be helpful if I end up pursuing an PhD. Which option is better, the internship or thesis? Thank you in advance!

It sounds like you would enjoy/get more out of the internship. I would personally take that as it sounds like an amazing opportunity that not a lot of undergrads get (whereas a great number of applicants have a senior thesis). Maybe if you explain the situation to your PI they could bend the rules a bit for you. Good luck!
