Hey guys, I just found out that next year, my 3pd year, it is part of the curriculum that we stay and do rotations during the summer. I was wondering how this works with the financial aid, student loans, and internships. If anyone has had any information concerning this it would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

You only just found this out! 😱

My advice is contact your financial aid office and ask them.

My summer rotations were considered part of the fall semester. We only paid tuition for two semesters, so we only got financial aid for two semesters.

My school requires you to pay summer tuition, in addition to the regular school year. This summer 2010 counts as part of the total financial year 2009-2010. I was unaware of the rules regarding summer students loans and scrambled a bit for alternative loans. I would definitely speak to your financial aid office for a complete understanding of your school's rules.

If its summer rotations and you live in NY (since I'm not sure how it works for other states)

- No financial aid is given in the summer, despite the fact that summer rotations is mandatory.
- Loans (I'm assuming you mean Direct Loans) will only cover you if you are taking at least 6 credits. Most summer rotations are 4-5 credits, so, yeah, what a surprise--no loans.
- Most, if not all, people have to pay out of pocket.
- Internships--if you're getting internship in retail or hospital, they understand since they probably had to deal with students all the time. Some hospitals prefer their interns to be in a certain "block" before hiring them, usually, liking the students that have the last block with rotations being in August only. Retail internships are more flexible in my opinion. But if you're looking into industry internship, their dates are set so you should speak to them about that beforehand.

Yeah, I think this applies to NY schools to my knowledge.

My university, since the idea of summer rotations just started 2 years ago at my school, reduced the tuition from $5000 to $2000 since "we didn't know". I guess that's pretty nice.

Well, I must say I am a little bit disappointed with the answers to this question. Don’t get me wrong, the information was very useful but they are also very discouraging. The reason I ask is because I was wondering if I should figure out how much I should appropriate for fall and spring so that I have enough left for summer. I guess my biggest concern is that they will expect me to pay for summer, and give me only enough to pay for fall and spring. If that is the case then it looks like my diet for the next 2 semesters will consist of water and mustard packets, but I guess you gotta do what you gotta do.
