Hi all,

I was originally going to be doing summer research (oh well), but now since everything is canceled. What should I do during the summer to enhance my application as well as to contribute to the community? I plan to do 100 hours of volunteering in a local food pantry since clinical volunteering is also screwed ( they simply will not accept students anymore). Not just for the sole purpose of enhancing my application, I believe that it is important during this time to assist those who are in need. Would medical school look down on this experience since I try to cram in this many hours into one summer (again, I might even do more just for the sake of it but I will not report fewer hours on my app)? Is there anything else that I could do? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hope you all stay healthy and well.

Sounds good. You have to make the best of a bad situation considering...

I think it's true that longitudinal volunteer experiences are viewed more favorably than shorter, more time intensive experiences.

Either way, volunteering at food pantry sounds good. Is there anything you can do to help people in regards to covid? I know there are a lot of volunteers doing things like making/supplying masks to healthcare workers, helping people who can't leave the house get food or supplies, etc. I think something like this, stretched out over the next several months, would show that you're trying to help out during these difficult times and would actually be pretty beneficial to people.

Sucks about the clinical volunteering, but makes sense. Our hospital is not allowing ANY medical students come in, much less premed volunteers.

Best of luck.
