If you can, definitely try to bring a car to Buffalo. Living near campus is convenient, but most of the social activities happen closer to downtown. Also, things like Target, Wegman's (best grocery store ever...seriously, you'll come to love it), the mall, etc are also about a 5-10 min drive from campus in Amherst. Therefore, most people live either in Amherst or near downtown (like yours truely). The public transportation isn't so great here; our subway has only one line! If anyone was curious, housing "weekend" is going to be June 21 and 22 (I think letters went out or are going out soon).

Thanks so much for the info SwineLake98. I'll look into the "housing weekend." Where do you think is the best place to live? How is Amherst compared to downtown??

It totally depends on the person. I grew up in Buffalo (actually in the city, as opposed to the suburbs) so I really didn't even consider living in Amherst. The people who are in Amherst have well-maintained buildings, rent with usually almost everything included, and are close to campus as well as things like the mall and Panera. I live in a (for lack of a better term) artsy-fartsy neighborhood with coffee shops, restaurants, bars, etc, which is great for people-watching and really close to Delaware Park. My roommate and I live in half of a house from the early 1900s. We pay all the utilities, but our landlord lives just down the street. The extra 5-10 mins it takes to get to campus is worth it for me! A lot of people ended up in Amherst because they didn't have a lot of time to look at places (and it is the 2nd safest city in America), and some of them are moving into the city this summer. It will definitely be helpful to make friends with people who know the area. There will be Second Years (hey, that's us in just over a week!) to answer questions during the housing events, and your class will soon have an e-mail list serve, and I know there will be plenty of people in the class who are from or currently live here. Hope that helps 🙂

Thanks Swinelake -- that was totally helpful!!! Hmm, I would have to say downtown is more my style. How is the student parking around there and on campus?? I'm sure I can get my questions answered later -- still, it is so nice for you to help us out.

Hi there, hope u choose buffalo...I applied for housing apr 26 and just got a phone call today with an offer for one of the 2 bedroom townhouses in creekside village. only drawback is that it looks like it wont be ready till aug 7, the day after we start class. anyone else get housing?

That makes sense. Yeah, I'm in SF right now but I should be heading back to NY in July. That's great that you're doing all the apt hunting now.

are any of you guys/girls going to housing weekend? I am here in Buffalo, but I still can't decide if I should get a roomate or not. What are you guys thinking about?

hey hey, when exactly is housing weekend again? I haven't looked into it yet. I live in Cali right now. Not sure about roommates... I guess it depends on the apartment and location....

Yay we now have a listserve I think🙂

Oh and housing weekend is June21/22 I think.

hello all, i just got into UB and was wondering how far it takes to get to campus if one lives downtown vs. in Amherst? how much is a typical 1 bdroom apt downtown and what amenities are included?
also, is housing weekend a must? i wont be able to make it and am thinking about getting an apt beforehand.
how do i start the process of setting up days/times to look at apts? im from nyc so im makin a trip up to buffalo and need to figure out how long it will take me to find a place.
sorry for the flood of qs!
THANKS!

Commute from Amherst: 5-15 mins
Commute from the city: 10-20 mins

The joke is that you can get anywhere in Buffalo in 20 mins or fewer 😛

As far as setting up appointments, it's just a matter of calling the landlord/rental office at least a few days before you want to see the place to make sure it's still available and they can show it. I was making calls for a few weeks, made appointments to see 4-5 places one day after work, and signed a lease a few days later!

thanks for the info swinelake98!
any buildings downtown you recommend?
ive heard of delaware park, mayflower, and the westbrook-any opinions on these?
gracias=)

Hey guys ... just got accepted today and I am so excited to meet you all ...

I think everyone I know who lives in the Delaware Park apartments are happy there and are staying next year.
There's a few buildings on Linwood, and I can't keep them straight! I know someone in the Elliot apartments, and I think the reason someone is moving out of the Mayflower is because she wanted to be in a house instead of a building (and have a roommate). There are 2 buildings at the corner or Summer and Linwood where people seem to be happy...not sure of the names...
There is also a building off of Gates Circle, close to where I live. I don't know anyone who actually lives in it, but I love my neighborhood...easy access to the Elmwood strip and Delaware Park!

I apologize for the delay in replying (last day of lecture tomorrow, and then first year is OVER with our final on Friday)!

Hi Swinelake, thanks for all your advice. I think I can speak for everyone that we appreciate it.

I was wondering if you had any "advice" for our first year in med school.

swinelake, i agree with sparrow-thnks for the info!! sdn is such a good resource!
anyone going up soon to take a look at housing?

2 bdrm $500-700 w/o heat is totally reasonable depending on location, apartment, etc.

www.artvoice.com is where you can find great apts in houses that are not apartment buildings. on the other hand, some of the buildings are pretty nice.

Wednesday nights are a good time to check the Artvoice classifieds online, too, because the paper come out on Thursdays and the listings get updated the night before (and they are sorted by date posted, which is helpful...the ads run in the paper for 3 weeks, so when you look at the print copy you don't know how long a place has been listed and they can be gone before you call)...oh, and artvoice.com/menus is a good resource for restaurants 🙂
I <3 my weekly alternative paper!

Ooh! Very very good advice!!!

You learn something new every day. 🙂

I just got accepted today and starting to look for housing. I'm not from buffalo, so a lot of the info I am reading here is pretty helpful!

I have a friend that lives in Peppertree, not sure if thats the name of the street or the apt complexes, do you know how far that is from the school.

lol, I'm not accepted yet but I hope I am soon...hopefully before housing look days.

Also debating about the roommate...seems like it would be a lot cheaper, but most of the places I've seen online only have 1 bathroom

BTW, is it really that boring to live outside of downtown? Like say, somewhere along Kensington avenue or something. I have no idea what that area is like btw, but when I was up there for my interview it really did seem like everything in buffalo was 5 minutes away from everything else so I almost feel like it's not a big deal where I live (I do have a car).

hey guys, i decided on Boulevard Towers, couldn't resist being that close to the mall. anybody else? just wanted to know who my neighbors are in case i need that cup of sugar 🙂

and SwineLake, thank you for all your help!!! i can't make it to housing weekend and i have to take care of it before i leave the country, so that info was really useful...and i added you to my AIM 😀

Well I'm officially accepted...so begins the housing hunt =)

Okay, I keep talking up www.artvoice.com, but my friend is renting her apartments, and I think they're in the housing bulletin. PM me for more info... I know she's looking for professional students from Buff State and UB.

edit: I would personally live in either apartment except that I already have one.

lol I did a buncha research then realized half the stuff I found has already been mentioned here.

Oh well, at least my research made me decide against Kensington Village...apparently it's not the safest place to live 🙁

Why oh why do the nice areas have to cost more

I was talking to my friend from buffalo last night and he said to avoid living on streets named after States and cities, instead choose streets that are named after fruits and trees.:laugh: Is that true?

Haha...yea, Connetticut and New Jersey Streets are over on the West Side, and probably not the place to be if you don't know the area!
However, the "Fruit Belt" (Cherry St, etc) is the kind of place where you instinctively lock the doors and roll up the windows, but I really don't think you'd see any apartments on those streets listed!
Tree and other nature-envoking names should be good...Elmwood, Auburn, Bird are all in my neck of the woods 😛

haha yes do NOT live in the fruitbelt at all costs.
I actually grew up on the West side ,Some is not so bad. A lot of nice old architecture. I didn't grow up in the student friendly area though:laugh: Where I grew up is pretty bad nowadays.

ps cirrius CONGRATS I am soooo happy for you!!!!

lol...guess I gotta keep an eye out for tree names

Anybody still looking for male roomies still?

Ohhhh I LOVE St James place. 🙂

Are all these threes in the Downtown area and near South campus?

Are there any medical students near North campus? I kinda like the Amherst area.

Swinelake - yes I do live in "the neighborhood." Lets just say I'm Walking Distance from Spot Coffee. (WDSC) 😉

What's already on your agenda for the summer?? I'm a huge fan of Cinema Sotto Le Stelle at the UU church.

Oooh, when does that start? I remember watching 'Moonstruck' last year 😛

I'm actually headed down to the square in a bit...thinking about checking out the Hellenic Fest tomorrow...can you believe next weekend is already Allentown? I frequent Shakespeare in the Park, too, 1) being so close and 2) knowing a lot of people involved. I love summer in this area! I'm also WDSC (hehe), but a little closer to Cafe Aroma (made friends with a number of the barristas studying at the end of the semester)!

swinelake and girlsporty -thanks for being our buffalo reps for housing qs!🙂

I need a place to Live!!! :scared:

Apartment hunting stinks!

Hi guys - I'm a brand new fellow-member of the class of 2011! I was actually talking to Swinelake today about all her advice to you guys via SDN and thought it was time to corrupt you all, hehe...

I'm actually from NYC and have lived here in Buffalo for almost a year now... I've also had to commute down to the medical school every day just as we all will be doing soon enough, and like Swinelake mentioned, the commute is much easier coming from Amherst, in general, than it is from downtown.

Amherst is more of the suburbia with Wegman's (and as Swinelake said, you WILL come to realize the value of the one-stop-shop-can't-live-without Wegman's!), the mall, Panera, Target, Starbucks/Lowe's/Red Lobster/Ooodles of other chain-type-restaurants (TGI, etc etc). The prices are higher than downtown, but again, it depends on the apartment itself - they range from $800 for a 2-BR place to $730, which is what I pay for my 1-BR place. However, the most important thing to look for in Buffalo is HEAT INCLUDED... if it isn't, make sure you keep it in mind when thinking about prices. I pay a $14/month surcharge for heat, but I also keep it jacked up to about 80 degrees because that is how I need it. I have current 1st year (technically 2nd years) friends who live downtown and although their apartments "include heat," they often need to turn their stove on and add on a space heater here and there to make it work - so before you go with an apartment just because heat is included (esp downtown), make sure to talk to a tenant or something and see how much heat is actually turned on!

I'm not out to make an argument for Amherst... but for instance, the commute for me is 5 minutes without traffic... I am a block away from Bailey, and as soon as I get onto Bailey, I just ride straight down it past Main and the next right turn I make is into the parking lot for med school. As much as I love downtown, the commute is a tough luxury to give up...

Again, like my dear friend Swinelake (with the adoooorrable Snoopy on her icon... I miss your SouthPark one... poopers) said, it depends on YOU... what kind of neighborhood do YOU want to live in? My parents were gung-ho on 1) safety (Amherst is infinitely more secure - no doubt about that. I usually forget to lock my apartment door) 2) parking (harder to find parking downtown and I have a band-new car so street parking is not an option for me unless the apartment includes a garage or off-street parking) 3) cleanliness (this is variable... you can get some ****ttty amherst apartments and yet clean downtown apartments, so this isn't cut an dry, but overall, Amherst apartments are newer and thus more well-kept... and you often pay for it!)

Someone mentioned Peppertree and that is where I originally signed my lease, and then realized it was a bit too out in the boonies for me. There are many apartments closer than that. Boulevard towers has many happy customers and even though I chose not to rent with them (because I'm not an apartment-building kinda gal), most 1styears-going on 2ndyear... that lived there this year are staying there, so that gives you one perspective.

For anyone who is looking for a clean Amherst apartment close to school with great maintenance, a backyard with a grill and picnic bench, and ample parking (I can autostart my car from my living room as I get ready in the morning for school), Emerson Square Apartments (where I live), are highly recommended. I can personally vouch for their cleanliness and prompt service... they will come at 3am to fix your heat and 5am to fix a toilet. They even change my lightbulbs because they don't want me to fall on my butt.

However, there are some reaaallllly cute places downtown if you have the patience. I personally have fell in love with two that were unfortunately both 2-BR and I just cannot afford them on my own... so if any of you are looking to live downtown and have roommates, let me know and I can recommend some downtown places as well.

Okay, I seriously just wrote a book.... time to shuddup and get to bed...

My apartment is walking distance from the mall too... actually I'm closer, hehe... and I got plennnttyyyy of sugar!

I think my head is going to explode trying to figure out what neighborhood I want to live in. Downtown seems sweet, Allentown seems sweet, Elmwood area seems sweet, Delaware Park area seems sweet, and Amherst has Wegman's (which I have fond memories of from my time in Rochester...seriously we'd head there at like 3AM to buy stuff and not get peed on [long story involving a NYC supermarket, lol]).

Add on the complexities of Buffalo neighborhoods in terms of safety (seriously it would appear that the ghetto can literally be 3 blocks away from the not-ghetto...which definitely does not make my life easier because now I'm trying to remember what to stay north of or west of or whatever of), and I'm about to give up. Especially since half the places I like are 2 bedrooms and I'm having trouble locking down a roommie who likes the places I do =(

*sigh*

I kinda wish more Amherst places had electricity included btw...I leave my desktop computer on running stuff overnight and I'm upgrading to an even more electricity eating computer so while it wouldn't be unaffordable it'd be preferable to not have to turn it off all the time to save money =(

cirrus, thats EXACTLY how i feel about the housing hunt. u put it perfectly. i think imna just pitch a tent on kampus...or in wegmans=)

random thought: where do UB students work out-is there a gym on campus ( i cant rem from interview day=P) or one in town that students are members of?

There is a basic gym on South Campus and a nicer one on North Campus, but a lot of people will get memberships to the Buffalo Athletic Club (aka: the BAC) which has a bunch of locations around town, including one right behind the mall in Amherst.

Question for current 2nd, 3rd, or 4th years....
Is it really a bad idea to miss class for a few days let's say early in Sept? I ask because my PI wants me to give a poster at Cold Spring Harbor at a conference those days, but I don't want to miss school or material that would harm my grades. I think presenting there is a good opportunity (however I have already presented this work twice, though at smaller conferences), but I don't want to risk messing up my grades. Any advice? I need to know in a few days. I heard all the lectures are recorded. Has anyone had to do this?
thanks guys/girls😍
