Hey everyone. This post is for those who got accepted to UB and are definitely going (Class of 2010).
Where is everyone from? What do you all do for fun, etc.
I think it will be pretty cool to know or maybe even meet some people before school starts.

I will be first:
I'm from the Buffalo area and can't wait to attend UB
I love the school, people, and the area.
I like to work out, run, go out and hang out w/friends, etc.
Now, who watches the Simpsons???? 😛

well, hopefully everyone writes back and maybe those in the area could all meet up one night.

Thanks guys!

well im not sure im going to buffalo, but im definitely considering it. i will def be at the 2nd look day in late april (the 29th it is..apparently theyre sending out the info about it in the next week or so). apparently, a lot of kids stay with hosts on fri night and go out to dinner and stuff, and then the actual organized activities are during the day on sat.

im from valhalla, 30 or so miles outside nyc, i went to wellesley (outside of boston), and lived in boston for a couple years after college (i graduated in 03). now i live in nyc where i am having as much fun and chilling out as much as possible before med school starts. im a neuroscience kid, i like partyin, thinking about saving the world, good indie music, culture and ethnic food.

kankshi

*jumps on bandwagon*

I was Early Assurance (as in, I didn't take the MCAT *ducks to avoid rocks being thrown*), so I've known I'm going to UB for a while. The envelope that showed up the other day with all of the health forms and telling me I start classes August 7 was a bit of a reality check -- "Holy crap, I'm going to med school in August!"

I want to live in NYC at some point while I'm relatively young (residency, hopefully), but I do love Buffalo. I'm big on the local theatre scene, we have some fabulous resaurants, and I'm just trying to finally let myself let loose and have some before the next phase!

I was hoping there would be a thread like this popping up 😉

hell yeah, I hear ya...that's why I posted this thread^^^^

SDN is definitely bias to the Westcoat California schools and Harvard...so i figured SUNY BUFFALO needed some love!

congrats on the Early Decisions...thats awesome...and I won't throw rocks at you for duckin the mcat... I wish I could have done that route!...definitely a lot less stressful!
are you from the area (buffalo)? what school, etc....PM me

Hey everyone!
I was accepted in December and am definitely thinking about going. When I visited, I really liked the area and the students. I'm psyched for the second-look weekend... I wasn't sure that Buffalo had one and I'd really like to go back! Is it a good idea to stay with hosts, or better to be in a hotel? I always feel bad like I'm imposing on a host or something, but I do want to get a sense of school life - maybe I should stay at a hotel and get a "host" just to show me the ropes?
What are y'all doing?

Oh, BTW, I'm a bio major from Poughkeepsie, went to Princeton and am doing a fellowship at a TB Vaccine org in Washington this year. I love love love upstate NY, snow and all!

*waves Hi*

I sort of want to go to the second look weekend just to meet people now 😉

The thing with UB is a lot of people who apply are from the area and for the first year or so live with their parents, and I'm not sure if you can learn about the living situation of your host ahead of time. If it is someone who has his or her own appartment, go with the host. If it sounds like someone that lives with parents, definitely go with the hotel because you are going to be in a much more independent living situation if you come to Buffalo!

BigRock, I'll PM you later!

I am most likely going to Buffalo.

I just got the 2nd look day letter today...is it really true that they will only let the first 50 students visit? It seems kinda silly to me.

Hi all! Did you guys get that mailing about a week or so ago about health forms and financial aid/scholarships? I sent back the scholarship application - does anyone know much about these? They say they give them to 30-40 students per year, but they don't mention how much they are. I wonder how hard they are to get, and how much they are for.

My impression was that it minorities are more likely to get scholarship money, but I could be wrong. I know my uncle got some sort of scholarship when he was at UB, but I think it was from some organization that my grandfather belongs to rather than through the school. I'm going to write the essay and send back the application to UB regardless.

I'm starting to think that instead of going to second look day, we should just all hang out 😛

*bump*

I just e-mailed my info for Secod Look Day!

And we should do something that night 😎

Get a crazy-@ss group going out to Chippewa (~50 heads)
that should be some fun!

4/29 is right after exams for both first and second years so there will probably be a bunch of us heading out with you guys too. Should be fun 🙂.

Wow, 4/29 seems like a looooong time away right now.

That's awesome!
can't wait!

BBRRRRRRRR!!!! I was born in Buffalo and grew up in Rochester. I've had enough of those winters. I'm in CT right now, but spent 10 years in San Diego. Once residency is finished, it's back to La La Land in Sunny San Diego. Enjoy your winters in Buffalo.

Most places measure snow by how many inches fall. In Buffalo, they measure by the foot!

I was born in Buffalo, although I have not been there in quite some time. I would love to go back and see the old haunts (from when I was 6! haha) and get some more Bills gear. I have been rooting for the Bills since I was in the womb and I am very excited that we signed Tripplett but disappointed that we lost Pickett. If you guys go to the games, I will request that you cheer extra-freaking hard for me. I didn't apply to Buffalo, though, so I'm prolly not supposed to be posting on this thread. But congratulations guys!!!

oh shoot! i got my flight back for saturday night - staying over friday. should i stay saturday too? or stay only saturday?
if i can't change my flight to sunday, anyone wanna hang with me friday night? 😀

That might be a possibility 😛

Where are you staying? That's, what, the week before classes end? Senioritis will be quite high, and I'm sure doing something 2 nights in a row won't be an issue.

Kazema, do you think the cool kids would mind hanging out with us lowly incoming first years? We should pick a mutual location!

I'm glad I bumped this baby.

*bump*

Come on, there has to be some more Buffalo love out there!

I imagine most of my class will want to meet (party with) you incoming peoples. I'm sure Polity (the student government) will make an announcement at some point and set something up for us but if not I will.

SoHo's hot

I got kicked out of SoHo once...

Something about jumping on the pool table. I was framed I swear.

I missed pool table dancing? Now I know who the cool first years are.

I wish I had a good story...best I have is when someone I was with got kick out of Transit Lanes.

Anyone going to be out tomorrow night for St. Patty's Day?

If any of you are interested in meeting some current students I think a bunch of people are going to SoHo tonight - the 4th years are having a post-match party there. PM me for details if you're interested.

bump

need buffalo love

I actually have a valid question with which to bump this thread...

A lot of people who end up attending UB are from the area. I'm wondering if we have an idea of how many people live with their parents the first year, and (perhaps more importantly) how many of them come to regret that decision?

I'm not sure exactly but there's a decent number - maybe 10 or so? I think most of them are happy with their decision. I think it's a good idea for two main reasons - you get to live rent-free for a year, and you get to meet people and get to know them before deciding to live with them for a year. Rooming with people you don't really know is so hit or miss. There are some roommates who are now like totally best friends! but there are also some who barely talk to each other and hang out with totally different people.

But then, the people who live kind of far from school (40 mins - 1 hr) do kind of regret having to drive so far every day. And having to spend the night on someone's couch all the time. Other than the one person I know who lives that far away, I haven't heard any complaints really.

I live about 10 mins from South Campus, so I think my plan for the first 2 years is either going to be live at home or move in with a family friend who lives on Winspear (and I'll need a new car at some point). After that, I do want to move to the Emwood/ Delaware area 1) to be close to the hospitals and 2) because I love the area.

I just finished my scholarship application! Whoot whoot!

i never got any info on the 2nd look weekend (dont think). i knew about it because i called the office to find out when it was, but i didnt get any paper info in the mail about it. tho i have been in texas for the past week..well..will see..whats this about only the first 50 students getting to visit?! thats just silly and cant be true!!

and i was thinking of coming sat-sun, but the admissions office told me most kids do fri-sat cause the day starts so early on sat, so i changed my plans (i didnt buy plane tix yet but..) whats everyone doing?

also, i havent applied for scholarship yet, and im debating whether theres a chance in hell i could get it. like, my parents are pretty well off, but my dad refuses to give me any more money since im over 21 now. so i dont know if they'll consider that, or if they're going to give it to kids who are in debt from undergrad, are minorities, and have 2 parents that dont have any money. any thoughts?

I think you should come Fri to Sun so we can all go out Sat night 😉

I have no idea how many people come to second look day...maybe they don't traditionally have more than 50 people interested anyway? My main reason for going is to 1) meet people and 2) learn more about financial aid and all that since I was luck enough to not have undergrad loans.

On the sheet with the scholarship info, it say that some are need-based and some are merit-based, so no harm in writing an essay explaining your situation with your parents and giving it a shot, right?

awesome

I didn't get mine yet...but I hope its that much!
I'm gonna need it!

I mailed in my scholarship info earlier this week. Not that I'm planing on getting any money, but any idea when we would get notification about those?

I don't know when we'll hear, but I emailed Mr. Rosso and he said we would be notified either way (i.e. if we get it or don't get it). He also said a lot of people had applied for them this year.

I still don't know how much they are for - anyone know?

I think it varies based on the award...I think some are grants and some are probably money endowed to the school by alumni and such. I'm not surpirsed to hear there are so many applications. Doesn't hurt to at least try, right? I'd say I'd call and ask about them tomorrow (I was actually on the phone with loan questions today), but I'm taking off after class tomorrow for a conference (but I'm bringing my lappy so I'll still be checking SDN, so post if you find out)!

when did u guys hear back from financial aid? --when did u turn in FAFSA?

hopefully a scholarship comes this way
I will take anything! the more the better baby

Woooooo spring break!

Crap I have to wake up at 8 and drive 10 hours. I dint' not plan this well.

I submitted my FASFA over Spring Break and got an envelope Wednesday, I think.

really?
alright, well I guess i will be waiting for that envelope then

did it say anything about a scholarship at all?

Nope, I think the scholarships come from a different office in the SMBS...the financial aid comes from the general office for the entire university...

*sits and waits impatiently*

Hey, does any one know UB feels about deferrals? Would be just as easy as sending them a letter with a reason for deferring? I've heard that state looks look less favorably upon students differing. Any truth to that?

Hmm...I don't know anything about deferrals, although I did once out of curiosity ask about transfering from one SUNY to another. I think that it is one of those things that probably is frowned upon, but can be done for good reason. Everyone at the SMBS at UB that I have talked to has been pleasant, so I'd say make a call and see what you would have to do.
