Supercluster - besides Boulevard Towers, what are the other apartments that med students live in?
hmmm...ok, by no means an exhaustive list, but here goes:
these are in Amherst and are all very nice places.
Boulevard Towers
Emerson Square
Campus Manor
these are in Buffalo and the first 2 are very good
The Westbrook
The Mayflower
Kensington Village (I would not personally recommend this place, since the neighborhood is way sketchier than anywhere else I'm suggesting, but a lot of people in my class do live there and the apartments themselves are very nice)
Some people also live on the North campus (the med school is on the South campus)...this is generally considered to be quite an overpriced option, although the apartments are pretty sweet. Also, they're good if you have no car, because there is a very reliable shuttle. However, if you really have no car, then it might be better to live within walking distance of the med school. If you're going to be walking to school (and more importantly, walking home from school at night), I would recommend not going south of Windspear Ave because there are much better neighborhoods that have cheap apartments, there's no reason to go to a bad neighborhood. As a general rule anything north of the med school campus should be fine. Check it out, for sure, but if it's in Amherst it's almost 100% guaranteed to be safe.
FYI, I've heard that you should avoid the Princeton Apartments because they are very noisy.
Lastly, there are many many homes that are for rent, both within walking distance and in the downtown Buffalo area. A lot of students choose this option. That would of course involve you living with roomies who you may or may not know beforehand, but often you can get together some people who are interested in living in a house. These houses are really hit-or-miss and I highly recommend that you look at the house before you rent!! Some of the houses are amazing and amazingly cheap and the students love them, and some are really crappy.
Expect to pay less for apartments in Buffalo vs. the suburbs (most people live in Amherst, some other areas are Tonawanda and Cheektowaga) but the downside of Buffalo is crappy parking and a longer commute. The upside is that Buffalo has way more culture and stuff going on than the burbs. I'd say that the class is pretty much split 50-50 between living in Buffalo and Amherst, so you'll have plenty of company no matter what you choose. Many students do eventually move to Buffalo once 3rd year rolls around because it's closer to most of the hospitals, but for the first 2 years I think it's pretty much 50-50.
