I want to apply for SUNY Fall 06, for all who applied or got into the SUNY school, how competitve it is? whats the avg stats for that school. i am worried sicne i hear the school is competitive, i know a person with 390 OAt that didnt get in(i dont know the GPA but not lower than 3.1)

Hey,

Although I didn't get into SUNY, I was waitlisted. My OAT scores were about average for SUNY, OAT AA: 340 and TS: 360. My gpa was around 3.68. Based on my experience, I would have to way that SUNY is pretty competitive. Coming from a decent school (University of MI) and with my gpa, I thought I would have a better chance of getting into SUNY than UCB...but I got into UCB instead. Yup, I was pretty surprised because the stats for UCB a higher than SUNY, especially the gpa portion.

So I suppose it really depends on the overall situation. I would think they would have accepted a person with 390...but they're going to be looking at many more factors. I think I didn't get accepted because I didn't do too well during the interview, but I had the same conception after my UCB interview. Also, make sure you apply early!!! I applied early Jan. and it probably hurt my chances.

I am nervous about not getting into the SUNY school, my top choice. to give me a better idea of how competitive it is, can the fall 05 applicants that got into the school gave their stats(if u dont mind) and some advice(other than applying early, i already know that). thank you.

Hey,

If you take a look at the 2005 entering thread and scan through it, you can see people who listed their stats, which schools they applied to, interviewed at, and got into. It's also includes a list of which people got into which school, so you can search like that as well.

I was accepted into SUNY off the waitlist

I'm from a Canadian school and my OAT scores were 350, I think a lot depends on the interview and also perhaps consistency in your academic record. I was talking to one of my classmates and he did not fair too well in his first two years of undergrad but excelled at the upper level courses and SUNY looked down on him for that because they thought that his performance in his lower level pre-requisite courses would reflect his performance in optometry school and thus they felt he was not the best candidate for the school. Though I thought I didn't do very well in my 1st year of undergrad either, but I don't know? I guess "bad" is a relative term, I even told them during the interview that my first year was weak (which was a B/B+ average) but they were like "no it seems you did not bad" ???

I honestly was expecting a rejection from SUNY because I didn't feel my interview went that well and my GPA wasn't stellar either, I also applied on like the 2nd last day before the deadline, haha, so I was surprised to be offered admission, though ultimately I chose to attend the school in Boston instead.

It's hard to say in terms of raw stats, GPA, OAT whatever. Each person is different and while your academic stats may be the same a lot of your extracurricular activities and other experiences can add up as well.
