Blessed beyond belief to have so many great choices! Haven’t gotten aid packages for anything yet so that could come into play at a later date for sure

SUNY DOWNSTATE
Pros
  • Have always wanted to live in NYC! Working closely with underserved communities in an urban area is really important to me
  • True P/F with no internal rankings is chef’s kiss 😘
Cons
  • OOS tutition :/
  • Having issues with their hospital system closing down??? (unsure how accurate that is?) seems to be a recurring struggle

Temple (LKSOM)
Pros
  • IS tuition
  • again, urban area and working with underserved communities. Lots of mentorship and I’ve heard the community is really strong
  • home hospital system
Cons
  • Lower ranking than jefferson - does that matter? Still will have access to research, community service, etc. Seems the only real difference in prestige is just ranking
  • Not the best area (i say this as someone who is from philly 😭)
Hackensack
Pros
  • super community-oriented. A lot of mentorship/collaboration
  • 3 year track with step 1 and 2 back to back - pro and con cause i genuinely can’t tell if it’s worth it to struggle though an accelerated program but get a free fourth year for research/ability to get an MPH/ etc.
Cons
  • Don’t know much about nutley nj, i’m pretty used to big cities
  • newer program

Jefferson (SKMC) - leaning the most towards
Pros
  • t50 program; very well-known and more prestigious than others mentioned
  • so many opportunities for research, community service, mentorship, etc.
  • home hospital system
Cons
  • private so as of now if no aid…100k a year😭

Summary: all great programs, I think i’d be happy at any of them! I’m interested in OBGYN, anesthesiology, IM, so maybe might be looking to go into a competitive specialty.

imo, philly is an underrated city, you could always take the train to NYC. I would rank SKMC first because Jeff is awesome but wait on the aid there. In the mean time, I think it's tied with Temple since they both have their own hospitals, Temple gets the edge for tuition and Jeff for everything else

that’s exactly where my head is at too. Definitely leaning towards jeff more then temple but if I get no aid my head can’t justify the cost difference for no real difference in opportunity😭 thanks for your input!!

You did an excellent job with the pros/cons of each school. I can only add that either Philly school would be a far better option than Downstate or Hackensack. No offense to those institutions, but it would make zero sense to pass on Jeff or Temple for either one.

Congrats on your dilemma.
thank you so much for the feedback! if you don’t mind me asking, why the two philly schools preferably? I’m leaning more towards them as well but do you think they’re just more prestigious/well-known/etc. cause apparently suny downstate is ranked higher than temple (not sure how accurate that is)

No sane person would choose Downstate or Hackensack over Jefferson. So you're staying in Philly.

Temple has come up a lot in the past 20 years. Its GME footprint is similar to Downstate's, but it has (had?) ~3.5x the amount of NIH funding. It's a place on the rise.

With no aid, would you put Jefferson over attending my cheaper state school? Or do you think attending Jefferson is worth the financial investment? Thanks!
